Language can create your network's reality The Language Editor is one of the most powerful tools a network creator can have. It's such a key feature that it would practically guarantee that there is no way I would leave Ning to go to any other platform that did not have this. Networks created on Ning cater to niche communities and each one of those communities has their own language. The ability to customize the environment through language is almost God-like in its power in a philosophical sense if you believe that reality arises out of Language.

To really take advantage of all that your network can provide I really recommend diving into customizing the world that your members step into. The New File Manager: Upload Files and Make a Splash with a Custom Main Page. Customize Your Pagination Style with CSS. If you're like me, getting the details of your ning network just right is an ongoing process. For example, I think that the default pagination styles attached to ning themes are BOR-ING. So I'm going to quickly show you how to add a little style to your pagination and make your pages just a little more unique. What You will Be Making is This on the right: You can see the finished product on any page on my network with pagination-for example, the Surveying Photos Page as pictured to the right.

Let's begin. First you want to find a style that you like and you can find these all over the web. ! 've found that some offered by blogs which help with blogger design have pretty good ones. You'll want to download the CSS style sheet for the style you want and if there is an image involved grab that too. Finally, you're gonna want to copy and paste the entire CSS from the stylesheet and add it to the bottom of your Advanced CSS in dashboard. Good luck! Need help with your Ning Network? Design tip: Add a hover effect to boxes. One particular effect you can add to your social network with CSS is to change the colors of your modules — the Events modules, text boxes, etc. — when a member hovers their cursor over a module. It's a cool effect that can bring some flash to your design, and help to highlight whatever content a member is looking at.

To start, figure out what color your modules are currently. To do this, click on the Manage tab then on "Appearance. " Click on "Module," and you'll see what color your modules are currently: That six-digit code tells you the exact color you've chosen for your modules. Once you've figured out that color, pick a different, but relatively similar color to be shown when a member hovers over your modules. Back on your appearance page, click "Advanced," and add this CSS: That CSS will cause the background to be light gray when a member hovers over a module. If you don't like the color, just keep trying out different colors until you get a look you like. Do More with Your Video Embed Option...and Smile. Perhaps this is a tip I should keep to myself, but it doesn't seem to be documented anywhere and I think NCs should know about this revelation I had last night.

You can embed presentations, documents in flash paper and even whole flash websites into your network using the Embed Video Option!!! How did I arrive at this revelation? Well at least on my network, land surveyors aren't terribly savvy at finding videos to embed and documents are more useful to them for sharing. So....Notice how the embed page says the following: Add Videos From YouTube, Hulu, Vimeo or Another Service I thought to myself......ANY EMBED CODE??? But why does it say nothing about thisin the help files on Ning? The fact of the matter is that the embed video option really is nothing more than an ability to add an object within the RSS enclosure for that Videos Feed. See it in action here using a Wix website for land surveyors support groups. See it in action here using an Issuu Document. ▶ Reply to This. Open link in new tab. Design Tricks #1: Adding an Arrow Indicator to Navigation Dropdowns. Welcome to the first in a series of Ning Creators blog posts focusing on simple design tricks you can use on your network.

Trick #1: Adding an Arrow Indicator to Navigation Dropdowns The pulldown menus created by our Tab Manager feature are extremely popular, however some Network Creators have expressed interest in displaying an arrow indicator next to tabs that have a dropdown menu (to make it clear to members that there's more content inside that tab). You can see this in action on Enrique Iglesias' official social network. To achieve this effect, visit the "Manage" tab, then the "Analytics" section. Paste in the following snippet underneath anything else that may already exist (don't delete anything): <script type="text/javascript"> if (typeof(x$) !

= 'undefined') { //Adding "dropdown" class to nav tabs that have subtabs x$("li.xg_subtab[dojotype='SubTabHover']").addClass("dropdown"); } </script> Save the changes. Save the changes.

Jen. Scrolling Slideshow Tip: Feature Members, Blogs, and More. I saw someone asking about this on JenSocial, and I wanted to take on the challenge. So...voila! It's been evolving over the day to include other things like blogs, which I will explain below. Featuring Members To understand this tip, please follow the steps on this discussion, but copy the text into a text document instead of a text box.

After you have the source coding prepared for the members you want featured, paste the coding provided here into a text box. I have changed the names of these members and have broken their links in order to use this example here: EDIT: The coding did not display properly. Embeding the new Vimeo embed code. Christmas effects. This is an HTML snow effect that someone (project by Scott Schiller) offers free for all. Ning Pro accounts have the ability to offer a fully branded Music Player, but if your Ning Network isn’t all about music, there are a number of lightweight options that may work for you that are worth checking out. I did a little research and tried out a few services myself in the hope that I could find a few decent alternatives for Creators who like having music but don’t need a full-fledged player. A few things to keep in mind… Nullum Gratuitum Prandium * There’s an undeniable truth about online services that offer music and/or embeddable widgets: It’s not cheap to host millions of songs. As a consequence, there are few completely free services that have survived with this business model (a great case in point is imeem, which shut down last year).
