On the surface, tiny houses seem like a romantic idea: living lightly and simply, paring down one's possessions to the minimum and challenging oneself to adapt to new horizons. But what is behind all those lovely, self-built facades, those ultra-efficient heaters and sleeping lofts? And is the tiny house movement a passing fad? These are the questions that Australian filmmaker Jeremy Beasley poses in Small Is Beautiful, a documentary that follows the aspirations and ordeals of four people in Portland, Oregon, who are attempting to build or live in tiny homes. What eventually unfolds through the film is unexpected and quite moving, as it progresses past the surface and into the more profound realities and radical changes that can accompany such a huge lifestyle shift.

Honestly, I feel these claims are misleading at best. To build any structure meant for extended residency, year round living, costs money. It’ll cost what you have planned and probably much more to settle into living in a small space. My plan parameters were simple. I wanted a comfortable home which meets all my needs, but didn’t cost me 30 years of loan principle and interest. I decided to use new building materials of good quality and forgo the search for used/repurposed building materials.
I saved all receipts from the build and have compiled a total cost based on reviewing them and calculating costs by categories in the building process. Building plans – $249 Ordered plans from tinyhousebuilders.com. Trailer (house foundation) – $4000 Bought new at best local price I could find for a flatbed trailer rated at 15000 pounds. I had planned on loving it so it’s not a surprise, but I feel so relieved that I genuinely do because this would be a very extensive experiment if I didn’t.
It’s like the whole thing is one big relief. The timing of my move north has been so serendipitous it’s crazy. 3 days after arriving, I had a job, made an awesome friend, and met my awesome boyfriend who happens to think Little Yellow is as great as I do. Adam Leu has the height of an NBA small forward, 6′ 7″, and wasn’t satisfied with just a standard tiny house. So he modified a couple plans by tiny-house enthusiast Michael Janzen and created the Tall Man’s Tiny House. It’s 21-feet long, 13′ 3″ tall (total, not the interior), and includes three roomy segments of seven feet. This place includes one bedroom, one bathroom, a loft, and an open living and kitchen room, as pictured.
