I’d like to open this up to reader suggestions, so let me tell you what we intend to cover in this course — and I hope you can give us feedback, telling us if we’ve overlooked something important or if you have ideas for how we could facilitate the whole process. Social Media We are organizing five workshops about social media: 1) The very basics. The first workshop starts with what we consider to be the very basics: RSS Feeds. To familiarize journalists with this tool, we will hold hour-long sessions, of about 15 journalists each, where they can work with Google Reader.
We also say a few words about how RSS feeds apply to blogs. We explain that RSS feeds can also be used to keep track of searches in Google News or for monitoring the new bookmarks in your network at Delicious. Basic Video. BBC revamps guidelines on social networking sites « Reportr.net. The new guidelines from the BBC on social media are now available online. There are two parts to this, the first dealing with how the BBC should approach social networking sites and the second on how the use by BBC staff of social networking sites. The guidelines on the use of social media by the BBC reflects concerns about protecting the brand. But they also recognises that the corporation should not trample into these spaces. For example, the guidelines say “We should be sensitive to the expectations of existing users of the specific site. They also caution against using social media for short-term gain based around the lifetime of a particular TV or radio programme: “We should take care not to give users the impression that we are interested in setting up a fully interactive profile or page if that page is then neglected or abandoned after it has achieved a one-off short term purpose”.

Extending McLuhan::The 14 Messages of New Media. Robert Logan Mark Glaser is on vacation for the beginning of this week. We’re pleased to have Robert K. Logan from the University of Toronto as our guest blogger here at MediaShift. New media have certainly changed the landscape of communications and education in an even more dramatic manner than electronic mass media did as was documented and analyzed by Marshall McLuhan in 1964.
I had the good fortune to collaborate with Marshall back in the 1970s and have tried to carry on his tradition, as have others, by focusing on the impact of media independent of their content. The “medium is the message” was McLuhan’s way of saying that independent of its content or its so-called message, a medium has its own intrinsic effects on our perceptions which are its unique and true message. What McLuhan writes about the railroad applies with equal force to the media of print, television, the computer and the Internet.
