Assignments | Writing and Experience: Exploring Self in Society | Writing and Humanistic Studies. Capitalism vs. Communism During the Cold War | Wandering through my Mind. The Cold War consumed almost half a century of global history; the end of World War II was only the beginning of this 45 year-long international crisis. America’s defeat of Japan in 1945 marked the beginning of this turbulent era, which only ended upon the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. This ongoing global conflict, based on the fight between Capitalism and Communism, was centered on the relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union. Fundamental disagreements over government power and social structure divided the formerly allied nations and sparked an intense battle for world supremacy. These two superpowers were the major players in the Cold War; however their battles were fought like a game of chess with smaller third-world countries being used as pawns by the careful chess masters of the United States and Soviet Union, who never actually directly confronted each other in battle (Metcalf, 2003).

Smile even though it’s breaking…” Judy Garland’s heart was indeed broken for most of her regrettably short life; but if anyone knew how to smile through pain, it was little “Baby” Gumm. Already a sensation by the age of two, Frances Ethel Gumm adopted the name Judy Garland in 1935, at the age of 13, and transformed from a small stage vaudeville act into an international superstar (Clarke, 2000). Upon her untimely, but tragically foretold, death in 1969 from long-term drug and alcohol abuse and a prolonged overdose of amphetamines and barbiturates, she left behind a legacy that has already survived longer than her prematurely ended career.

Before I forget | Wandering through my Mind. While thinking about all the family stories I could tell from my recent research, I realized that I was leaving a very significant person out of the timeline. Matthew Douglas 9/5/1980-10/17/2000 My best friend. My worst enemy. My brother. 13… Can it really have been 13 years ago? It could have happened yesterday; or maybe it was just a dream… No. He won many battles; but he lost the war. Before I forget is a place for me to remember my first, and truest friend; the one person I still wish… 13 years later, I still wish, I could pick up the phone and call. My brother. 1989, 5 years old As long as I can remember, Dad has always carried a hankie; there’s always one in his pocket, ready to wipe my tears and blow my nose.

Mommy and Dad just separated and we visit Dad on Saturdays. Dad met us just outside the woods and Matthew handed me over to him like the Olympic torch before doubling over from exertion. Never did get to see those fairies though. Like this: Like Loading... It won’t zip!! | Wandering through my Mind. Prim and Proper or Razzle-Dazzle? | Wandering through my Mind.
