Repair the MBR to restore Windows 7 to your Multiboot Options. Each time you install a version of Windows, it rewrites the MBR to call its own boot loader.
If you install Windows 7 (or Windows Vista) as a second operating system on a PC where Windows XP is already installed, the Windows boot menu incorporates the options from the older boot menu. But if you install a fresh copy of Windows XP (or Windows Server 2003) on a system that is already running Windows 7, you’ll overwrite the MBR with one that doesn’t recognize the Windows 7 boot loader. To repair the damage, open a Command Prompt window in the older operating system and run the following command from the Windows 7 DVD, substituting the letter of your DVD drive for d here: d:\boot\ bootsect.exe /nt60 all When you restart, you should see the Windows 7 menu. To restore the menu entry for your earlier version of Windows, open an elevated Command Prompt window and type this command: Quickly Translate Names to IP Addresses and Vice Versa. Run Check Disk from a Command Line to Check for and fix Disk Errors. You should periodically use the Check Disk tool to check the integrity of disks.
Check Disk examines disks and can correct many types of common errors on FAT16, FAT32, and NTFS drives. One of the ways Check Disk locates errors is by comparing the vol¬ume bitmap with the disk sectors assigned to files in the file system. Check Disk can’t repair corrupted data within files that appear to be structurally intact, however. Create and Use a Virtual Hard Disk on Windows 7. Virtual hard disks (VHDs) are a file type that acts like a hard disk.
In previous versions of Windows, VHDs were used by virtual machines, such as those created by Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 or Microsoft Virtual PC. Additionally, Complete PC Backup in Windows Vista created a copy of the computer’s hard disk as a VHD disk image. Beginning with Windows 7, you can now mount VHDs exactly like a physical disk. By mounting a VHD, you can easily copy files to and from the virtual disk. Additionally, Windows 7 can be configured to boot from a VHD. You can create a VHD from either the Disk Management snap-in or the command line. From the Disk Management console, follow these steps: 1. The new virtual disk is ready to be used, just like any other disk. From the DiskPart command-line tool at an elevated command prompt, run the create vdisk command and specify the file (to name the file) and maximum (to set the maximum size in megabytes) parameters.

Understand the clues the blue screen provides The color blue has become synonymous with disaster in the Windows NT world.
Although NT is more reliable and stable than its cousins, Windows 3.x and Windows 95, it nevertheless is subject to the frailties of third-party software, add-on peripherals and their device drivers, and Microsoft's bugs. Almost everyone who has used NT for any length of time has seen a blue screen (also known as the blue screen of death). Screen 1, page 58, displays a typical example. NT stops processing and paints one of these displays whenever it has encountered a situation in which it cannot continue, or in which continuing may lead to data corruption.
What most users and many developers don't know is what the screen's information means. This month, I'll talk about how NT generates blue screens, what leads to their appearance, how to interpret the cryptic data NT lists on them, and how to go about troubleshooting them.
