Three core components of ZCS (a) the Java based message store (aka mailbox server, tomcat in 4.5.x and jetty 5.0 onwards), (b) MySQL instances used for metadata, and (c) LDAP servers (master and replica) - all rely heavily on caching data in RAM to provide better performance and reduce disk IO. For all large installations we recommend at least 8GB of RAM. Our testing shows that a system with the same CPUs and disk is able to support more users when upgraded from 8GB to 16GB of RAM.
