Polar Sea 360° In the late 19th century the price of baleen skyrocketed in the South.
Baleen, a food-filtration system in whales’ mouths, is made of keratin and is arranged across the upper jaw, resembling bristles. People collected baleen for its strength and flexibility; it was often used in corsets, parasols, and collar stiffeners. In their urgency to collect baleen, American whaling ships depleted whale populations in the Western Arctic and began looking for new whale stocks. In 1888 a large, safe harbour for whaling ships to overwinter was found at Qikiqtaryuk, Herschel Island in the Beaufort Sea, one of the last refuges of the shrinking species.

Film editing: paid internship in South London, London. We are a small, award-winning market research company seeking two film editors to extract and transcribe excerpts from a number of filmed interviews exploring a fascinating, high-profile social issue.
We expect the work to take the equivalent of 10 days (max, per person) to complete, and it needs to be finished by mid-July. It can be undertaken either in our south London offices, or from home. If working from home, normal working hours need not be followed, though we will need to liaise throughout the process. Each editor will be required to edit a maximum of 12 x 2 hour interviews, with a maximum fee of £750, assuming the full number and length of interviews. We will agree exact terms on commission, and payment will be on condition that all editing is completed by an agreed deadline to an acceptable standard. The role will provide good experience of making challenging editorial decisions under pressure to tight deadlines. Deadline for applications: Monday 2nd July, 6pm.
