I don’t know if you chant but there is something about the Buddhist way of meditation that has healing powers and many people swear by it.
If you have Buddhist friends, they will often “chant for you” to wish you well or help you through a roadblock in your life – a truly wonderful concept that really works, just like our “traditional” prayers. Chanting relies on the repetition of mantras, often thousands of times, to elevate the person chanting into a meditative state. If done alone, this can be tough, especially with distracting noises around so that many people meditating will chant along with popular singers. Two of those New Age singers producing wonderful meditative music are Deva Premal and Karunesh. I put discovering is in quotes because most of my discoveries were bands that have been around for a little while that I either didn’t pay attention to (Feet) or had no idea existed (Walking Papers). The Grizzled Might fall into the former category as I had heard their name quite a bit over the past year or so but never had an opportunity to see them live and didn’t take it upon myself to seek out their music. The band wasn’t on the Block Party bill but the folks at Jet City Stream, who seem to know talent when they hear it, brought them along for an intimate session at Sole Repair during the festival’s opening day and they tore through about 30 minutes of pure power-garage rock.

As usual the festival had plenty to offer with an almost overwhelming number of bands spread across six stages (eight if you count the sets that happened at Sole Repair and Havana) and there was plenty of local goodness to be experienced in one of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods.
Block Party’s opening day wasn’t as crowded as it has been previously and I’m not sure why. Maybe it was the lack of a big-name headliner, maybe it was because it was a Friday, or maybe it was the slightly overcast weather. Headliners Fitz and the Tantrums delivered two sets, the first was a KEXP session at The Barboza around 5:30 and the second happened about five hours later on the main stage.
