March 2011. What is it about the spring that inspires fixing up and cleaning out?

March 2011

We deconstructed part of our master closet this weekend and painted it in preparation for new flooring to go in sometime next week. We decided it was time to cover the concrete in our master bedroom and thought we would also take care of the closet at the same time. I forgot to take some before pictures, so the one in this post will have to do. Previously, it had white carpet and a narrowish built-in shelving unit in the middle which you can see the bottom of in the top left corner of that picture. We decided to remove the built-in shelves so that the flooring wouldn't have to be cut around it and hope, when we are all done, to replace it with a stand alone shelving unit. I also took a good look at my clothes and ended up getting rid of a giant black garbage bag full. Doing a closet clean out is always a hard process to start, but so rewarding when accomplished.

As touched on, you do not need a variety of materials and you can get started on any project with two items: a hook and crochet cotton or yarn. If you like what you have seen so far and would like to try your hand at crocheting, rest assured that crochet is relatively simple to learn, if you go about it in the right fashion. Start With Beginner Designs: It is best to start with beginner crochet designs and then move up to intermediate and advanced. It may be tempting to attempt a pattern for an item you've fallen in love with but starting with easier patterns and working your way up can help you to avoid frustration and disappointment with your finished piece. For example, the first thing I ever made was an afghan. I always remembered that I'd "loosened up" too much with the afghan and that influenced my later pieces. Save yourself frustration and discouragement by starting out with something easy.

Little Urchin Crochet Covered Sea Stones. For quite some time now we have been mesmerized and inspired by the work of the unsurpassable artist Margaret Oomen - we are particularly drawn to her crocheted stones.

Her creations and her talent leave us absolutely speechless, as does her wonderfully kind personality. Resurrection Fern is her blog about her life as a mother of four, rural physician and textile designer. She also has an Etsy Shop where you can purchase her gorgeous crocheted stones (if you're quick enough since they go so quickly!) As well as beautiful still-life photographs of her crocheted stones. Today marks a very special day for us because Margaret generously agreed to create an exclusive Crocheted Stone pattern for Purl Bee readers (pictured above). The Materials The Pattern In this tutorial I will show you how to crochet a cover for a smooth sea or river stone inspired by the lovely sea urchin. Step 1: Make a chain 10 stitches long.
