An interview with Johannes Koelman « Philosophy to go

http://www.philosophytogo.org/wordpress/?p=1694 In your articles you defend the recently proposed theory that gravity is an entropic force, driven by the increase in information. Based on that, what would be the fundamental constituents of the Universe? Gravity can be understood as an entropic force, provided our universe is holographic in nature. And for that to be the case, the fundamental degrees of freedom need to be much sparser than one might expect based on standard quantum field theory. These holographic degrees of freedom are manifest in space-time in the form of causal influences.

Telepathy And The Quantum

Will the $ 1,000,000 Randi Challenge Prize soon be awarded? The prize, administered by the James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF), is offered to anyone who can prove in scientifically controlled tests some form of paranormal power. So far, Randi's prize has not been claimed, but rumour has it that under supervision of the JREF an elaborate telepathy test is being conducted with shocking results. http://www.science20.com/hammock_physicist/telepathy_and_quantum_0

Found: Stunning Roman super-highway built 1,900 years ago « Xenophilia (True Strange Stuff)

http://xenophilius.wordpress.com/2011/02/07/found-stunning-roman-super-highway-built-1900-years-ago/ It was a route once trod by legionnaires as they marched across a conquered land. Constructed by the Roman invaders as part of a route from London (Londinium) to Exeter (Isca), the 85ft wide earthwork stands more than 15ft high and consists of a sweeping road with deep ditches at the side. It was so densely covered by trees, however, that although its existence was known about, it simply could not be found until now. One of the country’s first roads, it was uncovered when the Forestry Commission, acting on advice from English Heritage expert Peter Addison, cleared the Norway spruce fir trees in Puddletown Forest. Mr Addison said it was the biggest Roman road he had come across and that it was probably designed to make a statement. It is thought that it might have been built shortly after the Roman conquest in the first century and its scale would have been chosen to intimidate people living nearby

The Daily Brainstorm |

http://www.thedailybrainstorm.com/default.aspx?category=Cool+News By Spooky Boogy I’ve read a lot of reports stating that the electro-magnetic radiation from mobile phones and other Wi-Fi devices are harmful to humans. But I never really believed it until I actually heard the story of these two French women who are living in a cave to escape these evil rays. Anne Cautain and Bernadette Touloumond suffer from hypersensitive reactions to electro-magnetic radiations. The symptoms include unbearable burning and terrible headaches, so bad that they couldn’t stand to live in the outside world anymore. After trying several other options, a cave has become their ultimate refuge.

Health | 40Tech

http://www.40tech.com/category/health/ This is one time when downscaling technology isn’t a cliché. None of that “cell phone implanted in your tooth” malarkey– the mChip is serious business. Serious, potentially game (and life) changing business. Once upon a time, getting tested for HIV involved a trip to the doctor, a bit of blood-letting, and a rather tense wait. It was months, at first, then weeks, then days, and eventually it worked its way down to minutes. That’s all fine and dandy if you live in a developed country, but if you happen to live in Africa, where HIV is running rampant, then visiting your local doctor’s office could involve something of a trek.
http://www.productiveflourishing.com/which-type-of-love-are-you-cultivating/ Today is Valentine’s Day and many of us are thinking about love. Unfortunately for us, we’re trying to separate the many different meanings of love at the same time, for many modern languages only have one word whose context determines the appropriate meaning. Agape (Selfless love) – unattached, pure, and compassionate love. In the Christian tradition, this is the type of love God has for his children, but many other religious share this concept but have a different word for it. Each of the first three loves is corruptible.

Which Type of Love Are You Cultivating?

The Gorbachev Files: Secret Papers Reveal Truth Behind Soviet Collapse - ABC News

Communist hardliners staged a coup against Mikhail Gorbachev 20 years ago, and the Soviet Union collapsed soon afterwards. Previously unknown documents, which SPIEGEL has obtained, show just how desperate the last Soviet leader was as he fought to retain power -- and how he begged Germany for money to save his country. There is one moment -- a single decision -- that some people still hold against Mikhail Gorbachev today, 20 years later. Gorbachev, the last leader of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and last president of the Soviet Union, his wife and his closest confidants had survived the attempted coup by the KGB, the military leadership and the interior minister. They returned to Moscow from their house arrest at Gorbachev's vacation home in the Crimean resort of Foros. Their plane landed in the capital at 2:15 a.m., local time, on Aug. 22, 1991.
