New Web address endings could be start of turf wars - USATODAY.c. By Charisse Jones, USA TODAY A sea change may be coming to cyberspace with Web addresses ending in anything from .a to .z. That has businesses increasingly worried they will have to spend millions to guard their brand names. The familiar .com, .net, .org and 18 other suffixes — officially "generic top-level domains" — could be joined by a seemingly endless stream of new ones next year under a landmark change approved last summer by the Internet Corp. for Assigned Names and Numbers, the entity that oversees the Web's address system. Tourists might find information about the Liberty Bell, for example, at a site ending in .philly. "Whatever is open to the imagination can be applied for," says Paul Levins, ICANN's vice president of corporate affairs. Many businesses see more problems than profits — opportunities for scammers to exploit brand names and mislead consumers, or even attack brands.

While some fret about new, more specific generic domains, others see opportunity. Internet Archive Wayback Machine. The Backyard : Montauk Restaurant, Mediterranean-inspired cuisin. Product design debt versus Technical debt | Andrew Chen (@andrew. Amazon’s tabs are a classic example of product design debt and the refactoring process to pay it down Incrementalism creates Technical Debt, and also Product Design DebtMost startups these days build products using the various philosophies of agile – both in the formal sense but also the informal sayings of “deploy early and often,” “fail fast,” “ship and iterate,” etc. Coupled with A/B testing, customer development, and thinking through business problems in a scientific, hypothesis-driven way, you end up with a powerful cocktail of techniques to build a modern startup in the most iterative way possible. This kind of incrementalism is mostly great, and people should generally do more of it. The interesting part is when you get a couple months into your product cycle.

You often end up with lots of half-done experiments lying around, an infrastructure that isn’t built to scale, and a mishmash of code that needs to be refactored. Of course, we are mostly interested in the second type. Social design explosion: Polls, quizzes, reviews, forums, chat, Why do social products tends towards clutter? One of the toughest design problems for people working on social products is the inevitable path towards cluttered interfaces and diluted brands, as you try to build more social activities and richness within your product.

As a result, these products tend to drift towards “portals,” “hubs,” or “platforms,” rather than clean, single-purpose destinations. This might be good or bad, depending on your viewpoint, but it certainly introduces a number of design challenges when every central “entity” on your site (be it a video page, or profile) has dozens of jumping off points for more complex interactions. Or when you have a “tab explosion” as you bolt on common social application paradigms like blogs, chat, or whatever. For MySpace, this manifested itself as a massive top menu detailing all the different ways to interact with the site, including Classifieds, Music, Games, Video, Forums, and others. What else am I missing? Online advertising. In 2011, Internet advertising revenues in the United States surpassed those of cable television and nearly exceeded those of broadcast television.[1]:19 In 2013, Internet advertising revenues in the United States totaled $42.8 billion, a 17% increase over the $36.57 billion in revenues in 2012.[2]:4–5 U.S. internet ad revenue hit a historic high of $20.1 billion for the first half of 2013, up 18% over the same period in 2012.[3] Online advertising is widely used across virtually all industry sectors.[1]:16 Many common online advertising practices are controversial and increasingly subject to regulation.

Online ad revenues may not adequately replace other publishers' revenue streams. Declining ad revenue has led some publishers to hide their content behind paywalls.[4] History[edit] In early days of the Internet, online advertising was mostly prohibited. Search ads. CPA, CPC, CPM, CPL – until recently, these acronyms presented themselves to me like some mysterious code that needed to be cracked. (I will not even mention my lack of knowledge when it comes to coding itself). In my state of confusion and my ignorance in thinking that all these terms were pretty much the same thing, I decided to look them up and find out exactly how these terms can benefit us mere mortals who would be pleased with some extra traffic. As juvenile as it might seem for some, I am going to start at the beginning, so that some of us (me) can benefit from (understand) these terms and why using them might be an additional way (but definitely not the only way) to generate interest. One of the main reasons why I love Wikipedia is that it tends to explain terms and definitions to me in such a way that I suddenly experience a light bulb moment, instead of scratching my head and thinking “I wish there was a definition for this definition!”
