The March 11 earthquake and tsunami damaged 7,200 homes in Rikuzentakata and Ofunato, Japan leaving 26,000 people in shelters and evacuation centers. There was also devastating damage to local industry, resulting in an economic loss equivalent to an estimated three years worth of the area’s GDP. Following an invitation by the Mayor of Ofunato, we have been operating in Southern Iwate for over six months. Our volunteers are clearing highway ditches, rice field drainage systems, cleaning and retouching damaged photographs, and continuing to remove damaged materials from homes.
With support from the Walmart Foundation, we now provide free tools and trainings specifically for organizations that involve volunteers in the fight against hunger.
