This is my husband, Bryan. We met and dated in high school, but didn't get married until many, many years later after a very long "break" in our relationship. Like, I hadn't seen or heard from him in 8 years when out of nowhere he "poked" me on Facebook (yes, really), and now the rest is history. " Well, anyway, this bag was a humbling exercise in "why you should read instructions, even if you think the project is simple". I totally screwed up the order of operations in terms of sewing the straps to the yoke, and ended up with messy stitching. This annoys me to death, especially because I have no one to blame but myself. It's the Show Off Bag, by Rae of Made By Rae.

It's an adorable, quick little pattern, and had I read the instructions properly, my bag might have been less of a hot mess. Don't let my failures deter you from this pattern - it's a great, adorable, very clearly written pattern. I used a wool suiting from my stash on the yoke portion, and the new Anna Maria velveteen for the bottom. You can see the hot pink lining peeking out there, which I love too.

There are quite a few different styles of bag, with the tote bag being the simplest (and best for beginners to start with), and handbags or messenger bags with many compartments usually being the most complicated. - Fabrics used for bags usually have to be durable and the most popular choices seem to be quilting weight cotton (which is available in many different patterns and colors), and home décor/upholstery fabrics. For wipe clean bags, vinyl and leather are good choices. Other durable options are denim, canvas and some wool fabrics. If you want a bag which is not going to need to be durable and won't need to carry anything heavy like books, then you can choose lighter weight fabrics like linen or even silk.

This tutorial does not include the flap designs, alas. As promised, here is the basic bag tutorial like the one I made Jamie and Chelsea. I have not included the flap designs, just the basic bag. That will have to be another post. Be creative and come up with your own flap variations. I considered doing a PDF of the pattern pieces, but they are mostly too big to fit on letter sized paper, and pretty easy to make yourself if you have a ruler, a 6.5 inch circle, and a coffee cup on hand.
