Inside the Sketchbooks of the World's Greatest Type Designers - Maria Popova

Typography Sketchbooks is like a visual window into the minds of the world's most exciting type designers and, in turn, the intricate art-science of typography itself -- a medium both creative and practical that has to walk the tightrope between centuries-old tradition and bleeding-edge innovation with equal parts grace and agility in an era of changing reading habits and design expectations. An understanding of content and context is essential, but, typographically speaking -- that is, in terms of the letterforms -- beauty, however defined, is key. The beauty of precision; the beauty of expression; the beauty of how one letter conjoins with others on either side of it and above and below; the beauty of how it looks on the page or screen.

And along that line...when you're feeling blue...doodle! When you're feeling lonely...doodle!!! When you're feeling bored...DOODLE! When you're feeling like you'll never create another painting in your life then...DOODLE!! Actually I am not feeling blue or lonely, just unmotivated to continue to try to paint "the big one. On Hand Lettering Everyday

Recently, I’ve been getting lots emails and tweets from folks interested in learning more about my daily hand lettering process, so I thought I’d talk a little today about what the experience has been like for me since I started 114 days ago. Truth be told, when I started this project, I had no idea how challenging it was going to be. I’m not sure what’s more challenging: having to think of something new to post every day or the actual process of hand lettering my ideas. Here’s how it works for me most days: I get up at about 6:30 in the morning. There are, of course, days when I can’t get up and hand letter something first thing in the morning, so I might work on something the night before. But generally, it’s a pretty simple and straightforward daily practice. Ruth Yeaman (Happyholic) on Pinterest. 5 Tips for Better Self Portraits. Self portraits can be a little intimidating, especially if you need to get a new photo for a certain occasion or deadline.

5 Tips for Better Self Portraits

Over the years, I've taken hundreds of self portraits (yikes!) For blog posts, craft projects and to entertain myself, of course! When you don't have a camera savvy friend available it can be fun to take your own portraits. Here are five easy tips for getting the best photos you can... The first thing most people try when taking self portraits is a photo at arms length. Remember, one of the best things about taking self portraits is that you can look at what you have and take more if you want to. Reflective self portraits are really fun to take. Contrary to what some people say, a downward angle isn't the only flattering way to photograph yourself. A couple years ago I tried to do the 365 self portrait challenge where you take one every day for a year. Self portraits can be so much more than a flattering or pretty photo. Have fun playing around! : tips for fun "everyday" photos. I tend to take way more photos around my house than when I am out and about.

: tips for fun "everyday" photos.

I think it's because at my place, I'm in control of the situation and don't feel silly shooting the same thing multiple times. At home, no one (except Paul) stares at me like I'm a crazy person. I want to get better at taking out of the house shots. I would love to carry my camera with me more often and feel more comfortable grabbing photos, but in the meantime, I've gotten decent at taking these "everyday" photos - the ones from my normal life. I thought it would be fun to share tips this week because many of you may be documenting a week in your life with Ali Edwards next week.

Of course, the one I was imagining was not exactly what I ended up with but it was a good experiment and experience. In my mind I envisioned a background full of handwriting. I ended up with half a page of embossed handwriting paired with journaling inter-mixed between the lines. Here’s a look at the completed page: And here’s a look at the process: Using a Martha Stewart fine-tip glue pen, I hand-wrote some words onto cardstock. I wrote on about half the page and then used a heat gun to set. Reflections, Ideas & 2012 Title Page. Welcome to Project Life 2012.
