Unlike the incredibly talented multilingual med students & doctors helping me with this series, I am completely lost if we aren’t all speaking Texan English, y’all. On 17th July 2013, Cardenal Herrera University was granted permission to teach medicine in English by ANECA.
This course was offered for the first time in September 2013 and is now up and running. Although the degree is offered in English, students must be able to pass an exam to prove their ability in Spanish before they can even start the degree. The Spanish government has made this a precondition for acceptance onto the course. The level required is B1 in the DELE (an official Spanish as a foreign language qualification). There will also be an entrance exam in general knowledge, maths, chemistry and biology that students will have to take regardless of their previous qualifications. Upon completion of these two years, students can transfer automatically to Medical University Pleven in Bulgaria to complete their studies. The entire degree takes six years to complete but it offers British students the chance to spend two years in Spain during which time students will be expected to learn Bulgarian. All students who successfully complete the pre-medical qualification will be guaranteed admission to Medical University Pleven. This is the only programme of its kind in Spain to guarantee this transfer. The basic structure of the degree is that the first two pre-clinical years of the degree take place in Murcia, Spain and then the three clinical years plus first year of training/internship takes place in Pleven, Bulgaria. Will my degree be recognised? This is a highly important consideration when choosing to study medicine abroad. However, we can confirm that there are many medical schools around the world that specialise in teaching international students. Many of these universities' graduates are working in the UK healthcare sector although often they may have amassed considerable experience abroad in addition to their studies. All qualifications taught within the European Union should be judged as equal but it is worth checking with the GMC as they will know more about the relative quality of medical qualifications than we or an education agent can.
