Pituusaste kertoo etäisyyden nollameridiaanista eli Englannin Greenwichin kautta kulkevasta pohjois-etelä -suuntaisesta viivasta ja leveysaste etäisyyden päiväntasaajasta. Leveysasteet kulkevat siis leveys suunnassa ja pituusasteet pituus suunnassa. Kuulostaa yksinkertaiselta, mutta yllättävän moni menee sekaisin niiden kanssa. Nollameridiaani ja päiväntasaaja jakavat maapallon neljään osaan. Koordinaateissa ilmoitetaan ilmansuunnat, joilla kerrotaan minkä maapallon osan koordinaateista on kyse, eli mihin suuntaan kulma on mitattu päiväntasaajasta tai nollameridiaanista katsoen.
Koordinaattijärjestelmät Maapallo ei ole pallon muotoinen, eikä se ole ihan soikeakaan, vaan pikemminkin epäsäännöllisesti litistynyt pallo. Use the location menus at the top to zoom from a world view to a continent, country, or other region. Identify your geographic position on the map using the latitude and longitude display at the bottom left. The latitude and longitude values change as you pan around the map.
