The Skewed, Anamorphic Sculptures and Engineered Illusions of Jonty Hurwitz. This dude recreated a scale model of New York City. With LEGO. 5 Works of Legitimate Mad Science Passed Off as Art. Nobody loves bullshit more than the art world, and nobody tolerates bullshit less than the world of science, so when the two do meet it should be a knock down brawl to the death. That's just not always the case: Sometimes they get along quite well. Sometimes they even improve one another. Sometimes when they get together, they make sweet, sweet love. And sometimes their children are shithouse-rat crazy. Listen: We give artists a lot of shit here (mostly because we miss all of the girlfriends we have lost to them) but honestly?

And then there are performance artists. Performance artists are what you call mimes who can't shut up and lack the spatial awareness to form invisible boxes. Now, meet their king: Jaime del Val has jery-rigged a system of portable powered projectors and attached them to his dick. Why? He claims he is advancing the cause of a new sexual identity: Pangender Cyborgs.

Mio I-zawa is Japanese, so you're about to learn of some schoolgirl robots or train-rape, right? Wrong! This concept art from the Shuttle Program's early days is gorgeous, deliciously retro. Just to clarify some of the images: 08_00981 (1st image) is an earlier concept of the original NASA shuttle design, which was to be a much smaller design with a (IIRC) 30,000lb payload into an equitorial orbit. When the USAF joined the program, they added the requirement of boosting the same 30K# payload into polar orbit, which doesn't get an assist from the earth's rotation. This meant a 50,000 lb equatorial payload. 08_00958, 08_00983, 08_00861, and 08_00984 are all late stage renders. The last one might even be from after Rockwell got the contract to build the STS. This was after the debate over shaping, propulsion, size and mission. 08_00960 is an earlier render. 08_00973, 08_00942m, 08_00943, 08_00945, 08_00946 are all depictions of the original winged liquid fueled booster stage.

The earliest large booster concepts imagined, basically, the S1C first stage of the Saturn V (complete with 5 huge F1 engines) with wings added. 08_00999, and 08_00998 show liquid fuel reusable boosters. Looking like a bleached version of Google Earth, the level of detail and accuracy in this tiny re-creation of Manhattan island is truly astounding. The fact that it was hand carved out of a huge block of marble makes it even more impressive… and at two and a half tons incredibly heavy too. Recently put on display at the David Zwirner gallery in New York, the piece titled ‘Little Manhattan’ was meticulously carved by artist Yataka Sone using photographs, many helicopter rides and yes, Google Earth to reproduce the islands towering buildings, canyon like streets and famous bridges.

To get an idea how accurate this sculpture is, just listen to the peoples comments in the video following the pictures.
