Instant Tavern Generator. Howling Tower: A Brief History of Attack Bonuses. The subject of the bonuses that characters earn for leveling up is a contentious one (in my experience, anyway). I believe that's because it goes directly to the heart of what a D&D character is at its most fundamental: a list of numbers and situation-based alterations to the rules. The arguments center on whether the benefits of gaining levels are too much, too little, or just right. There's a sense that these bonuses have escalated across editions, and that's generally true, but only in certain regards. It's not true in one aspect that may surprise people -- attack bonuses. I've graphed the "automatic" attack bonuses that fighters gained in early editions of the game (OD&D in 1974, AD&D in 1979, and D&D Basic/Expert in 1981) along with 4th Edition (2008).

These comparisons are necessarily rough because of the game's evolution, but they're still important. Before showing the graphs and drawing conclusions, I'll lay out some of the ground rules. These are only the basics, of course. Steve. Angelic/Celestial alphabet. Free Dungeons and Dragons fonts. TSR & WotC Font FAQ. TSR & WotC Font Usage FAQ This is a FAQ in that the question "What font did/do they use? " is frequently asked; it is (obviously) not a standard FAQ question & answer session. None of these fonts are available here for download, nor do I plan to make them available, for copyright reasons. Please don't ask me for them! In most or all cases, as long as you know the name of the font in question, you can find it somewhere on the net, either as freeware, shareware, for-sale-ware, or pirateware.

The geomorph mapping project was a self-challenge to produce 100 dungeon geomorphs in my old-school pen-and-paper style. It took quite a bit longer than I expected to be finished, from October of 2009 to October of 2010. Here is a compilation of the various sets of six geomorphs I’ve posted in that time – with links to the source posts.

You can also download the challenge as a PDF here. (Please, if linking to this in your blog, website or forums, link to this page, and not directly to the file, as the file gets updated and renamed, whereas this page does not get renamed) A lot of other people are also making geomorphs that link up with my 100 x 100 design. It seems that I’ve started something, and that it is pretty awesome! Plus there’s a cool twist on the theme: Amanda Michaels crafted a pile of urban post-apocalyptic geomorphs based on my design… but urban… and awesomely post-apocalyptic!

My old friend +James Graham plussed me the other day (is this actually a verb, I can't decide) with the question "Do you know any good RPG Mapping Tools" and I'm sorry to say that I couldn't give him a straight answer.

Although Jim wasn't very specific in his request, the underlying quandry with mapping is that there's so much choice in terms of the types of map you want to make. At the macro level you have Starmaps but at the micro level there are Battlemaps, with all manner of world maps, region maps and dungeon maps inbetween. First lets look at... Battlemaps This type of map is mostly for use during play (with or without miniatures) and often uses the 1" to 5' scale convention. I restricted myself to free tools available to either download or use in a web app interface and limited myself to around 1½ hours time in order to learn the interface and build the map. Dungeon Maker ( Dungeon Painter ( Gimp Script: Fractalize Path. A follow-up on Cool as a Cucumber's question about making fractal lines in Gimp I once again pulled on my coder hat and, stealing liberally from the inkscape fractalize extension and Isomage's random cave script (thanks for the gaussian random number generator!)

, proceeded to duct tape a script together! This script will take the active path and fractalize it, using a random midpoint displacement algorithm, with the displacement proportionate to the length between nodes. Checked, it will walk the path and create new evenly spaced noted. Fractalize Path.
