Consider projects as a hidden treasure. That x which marks the spot where all the efforts meet or where they might begin. Some are small, just simple tasks we go through to add some of ourselves to whatever it is we’re learning; others are immense, they are born to us, they develop through us, they shape and take our learning forward. Whether you’ll go for TBL (task-based learning) or PBL (project-based learning), you’ll discover that placing yourself as a teacher in the background, you give learners the opportunity to see things for themselves; to experience what it’s like to have questions and pursue the answers to them.
It is all about the skills, yes; the skills we should all try and develop, the skills that can bring meaning to our future and their future. Please keep in mind that ‘background’ doesn’t mean ‘absence’. We’re there too, just not at the front. Personalization v Differentiation v Individualization (PDI) Chart (Version 3) The PDI chart was created for a reason: to clarify the differences in these terms. In 2010, the National Ed Tech Plan defined all three of these terms as they are related to instruction. We needed to emphasize the differences: Personalization is learner-centered. The other two, Differentiation and Individualization are teacher-centered. Personalization or Personalized Learning means the learner is driving their learning. When the learner takes responsibility for their learning, teaching and learning changes.
It has been some time since we initially published the PDI Chart in January 2012. We updated the chart again to version 3 from your feedback. Individualization involves assessment OF learning. Mindset Matters. Mindset is about believing in yourself. Carol Dweck, the Lewis and Virginia Eaton Professor of Psychology and author of "Mindset" discovered in her research at Stanford that belief guides a large part of your life. Much of what you think of as your personality actually grows out of this "mindset" and could prevent you from fulfilling your potential. You can have either a fixed mindset or a growth mindset.
Think about someone you know who has a fixed mindset. Consider how they are always trying to prove themselves and how they are supersensitive about being wrong or making mistakes. They tend to be someone who constantly finds excuses so they might not take some risks or try something new or challenging. Did you ever wonder why they are this way? All of us are born with a love of learning.
