COVID-19 - A firm reason to give up cash

The march of alternative payment methods to cash has been ongoing for many years. Credit cards, debit cards, PIN technology, mobile payments and contactless have all been in use for some time. However, it is the global pandemic which has caused the acceleration towards a cashless economy, which will bring both security and safety benefits. With the World Health Organisation advising the use of contactless technology to prevent the spread of the virus, hygiene concerns around the use of cash have never been greater. Cash Circulation – a Challenge for the Elderly in Post Covid

In this post, Art Stewart, Global Head of Sales & Marketing at IDEX Biometrics, discusses cash circulation being the most challenging aspect for the elderly in a post Covid world. Research indicates that vulnerable members of society, especially the elderly who have remained unbanked or those without smartphones or unaccustomed with online transactions are reliant on cash which could become a risk. The switch to contactless Just how easy it is to catch Covid-19 from a dollar bill is still controversial, but following government warnings, many people have switched to contactless cards (if they could get them), mobile apps or online shopping – but fewer elderly people are accustomed to these technologies. While about 50% of Americans regularly make online payments, that figure falls to just 32% in the over-sixties. How biometric identification helps the elderly? Coronavirus to boost cashless society

No one ever doubted the appeal of hard cash. Although it has withstood the test of time (about 5000 years) no romance is ever perfect – cowrie shells were pretty cumbersome and a pocket of coins will pull your pants down. Paper seemed like a good idea – until Covid-19 exposed the risk of catching infections from it. REGULATORY RELEASES. HOME / BLOG / Payments / Touch-Free Payment Technology – The Extra Layer of Security During Money Transactions In the fourth and final post in our series on touch-free authentication, Art Stewart, Global Head of Sales & Marketing at IDEX Biometrics, discusses touch-free payment technology and the extra layer of security this provides during money transactions.

Touch-Free Payment Authentication - The Extra Layer of Security

Most people in Europe and increasing numbers in the US are carrying cards capable of making payments without touching a . Most have never used them that way, partly because the maximum transaction value is low, partly because of security fears. Covid-19 combined with a new security feature may finally persuade us all to make contactless payments. Why do we need contactless? COMPANY VALUES. Touch-Free Payments Reduce Contact-Based Interactions

Airborne or contact surface-based transmission, what is the bigger threat? The truth is at this point in time, nobody really knows. What we do know is that as difficult and inconvenient as it seems they both play a part in the spread of Covid-19 and our world is likely changed forever. The retail industry has reacted definitively in changing the way consumers interact at checkout to maintain adequate separation for airborne transmittal. Consumers want Biometric Payment Cards for security and hygiene.

HOME / BLOG / Payments / How consumers are looking forward to Biometric Payment Cards in terms of security and hygiene? Welcome to the first post in our series on ‘Are we at the tipping point for global biometric payment card adoption?’ In this post, David Orme, SVP of Sales and Marketing at IDEX Biometrics, discusses how consumers are looking forward to biometric payment cards in terms of security and hygiene. There are two global pandemics underway; one is Covid-19, and the other is fraud. With luck, the imminent deployment of biometric payment cards will help to make history of both.

During the Covid-19 lockdown, scrutiny has been focused on Point-of-Sale keypads as a potential route of infection. Consumer reluctance to use debit and credit cards to make contactless payments has been based on two things: fears that the method is inherently open to fraud and the low limits that issuers and payment networks set on the transaction value, which confirms those fears. Contactless Payment - The new weapon in the age of coronavirus. HOME / BLOG / Payments / Contactless Payment – The new weapon in the age of coronavirus In our second post in the series on ‘Are we at the tipping point for global biometric payment card adoption?’ , David Orme, SVP of Sales and Marketing at IDEX Biometrics, discusses contactless payments as a new weapon in the age of coronavirus. Both banknotes and coins can carry coronavirus, but there is less public trust in electronic commerce and banking. Contactless cards that confirm the identity of their rightful owner are about to solve both problems. Early in the Covid-19 outbreak, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Banking Authority (EBA) both urged the world’s governments to discourage cash. PIN pads are also seen as potential transmission hazards, so most European countries responded by raising the limits they set on contactless transactions from €30 (£30 in the UK) to €45 (£45).

Single-ownership biometric payment card during the Pandemic. HOME / BLOG / Payments / How effective is a single-ownership biometric payment card during this pandemic? In our third post in the series on ‘Contactless payments in the age of coronavirus’, David Orme, SVP of Sales and Marketing at IDEX Biometrics, discusses the effectiveness of a single-ownership biometric payment card during the pandemic. Given the Covid-19 pandemic, everyone is looking to protect themselves and their families. But what is safe and what isn’t? Despite all the hours of newsreels, government announcements, and blog publications, most of us are little the wiser.

Fortunately, there are some obvious precautions we can take and a biometric payment card is one of them. Why is there so little advice? For once using the term unprecedented, which means “never done or known before” is true. What we do know is that viruses are invisibly small. WHITE PAPERS. Algorithms are an integral part of a high performance fingerprint matching system. The purpose of the algorithm is to derive high quality match scores through the comparison of a stored fingerprint template to a live touch image. As touch sensors have evolved to increasingly smaller geometries based the limited real estate on today’s smart phones, algorithm complexity has increased substantially in the derivation of security strength with smaller and smaller amounts of information. Traditional algorithms have relied on large images where a set of minutiae features can be readily extracted and matched. As touch sensors continue to get smaller, advanced algorithms become critical in order to provide higher fingerprint accuracy rates, at faster matching speeds, in more operating system environments, with more efficient yields and costs.
