Dinner at Christina's. Celebration Hummingbird Cake, and Saveur! The simple act of Cake means celebration to me. And indeed, there's a lot to celebrate right now: May Day, the full-blown coming of spring and the imminent arrival of summer, my friend Kashy's birthday (happy birthday, Kashy!) , the OBL news-- the list goes on. So much happiness to celebrate at the beginning of May! Here's my celebratory cake: a celebration hummingbird cake, with sweet, incredibly moist layers packed full of banana, pineapple, and coconut, with the nutty crunch of pecans and the slightly sour and salty finish of cream cheese frosting.

Usually, I'm not a big fan of a million and one healthy ingredients invading my cake space, but for some reason, a hummingbird cake, dressed up with the addition of coconut, just seemed perfect for the season. You guys, words cannot express how hugely flattered and honored I am to be nominated by you all and to be chosen as a finalist by the editors at Saveur. Read on for recipe.... 1. . 1. Enjoy! We're spoilt for choice of bread in San Francisco, where there's enough artisan bread bakeries around that not having freshly baked bread with dinner almost seems enough reason to turn in your foodie membership card. I must confess that I'm not the hugest bread person, probably because there's stiff competition for Most Ardent Bread Lover in this town, and my carbohydrate of choice tends to be rice, since it was a fixture of the dinner table while I was growing up. I will make an exception for brioche, though. I like that it inhabits some undefined but utterly delicious middle ground between bread and cake. I like it even though it's so rich because you are literally shoving as much butter as possible into the dough before it loses all structural integrity, people still tend to enjoy it by putting even more rich items on, like...more butter, or eggs, or pâté.

Project Food Blog Entry: Hot Tamales! Crispy Beef Lettuce Wraps. Requested no less than 4 times so far this month by my clients and family, I feel this recipe is worthy of a blog post. Crispy Beef Lettuce Wraps are the ground beef cousin to a previous post of mine for Barbecued Asian Chicken Lettuce Wraps. Lean ground beef is browned and seasoned with sauteed onions, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, and soy sauce and gets a spicy kick from pickled ginger - a favorite of My Oldest and No Thank You Boy when we go out for sushi - and Asian chile pepper sauce.

Scooped into bibb lettuce leaves and sprinkled with chopped cashews, this handheld meal does not disappoint. I made a double batch of this Asian inspired recipe for my family.
