Universal instructional design principles for Moodle | Elias. Tanya Elias Athabasca University, Canada Abstract The paper identifies a set of universal instructional design (UID) principles appropriate to distance education (DE) and tailored to the needs of instructional designers and instructors teaching online. These principles are then used to assess the accessibility level of a sample online course and the availability of options in its LMS platform (Moodle) to increase course accessibility. Numerous accessibility-sensitive plug-in modules are found to be available to Moodle users, though relatively few features were included in the sample course analysed. This may be because they have not been made available to instructors at the institutional level.

The paper offers a series of recommendations to improve the accessibility of online DE to learners with diverse abilities, disabilities, and needs. Keywords: Universal instructional design; distance education; learning management systems; Moodle Burgstahler (2007) describes UID as: Equitable use.

46832947. "Knowledge Series" Index. Quality Improvement, Quality Assurance, and Benchmarking: Comparing two frameworks for managing quality processes in open and distance learning | Inglis.

Alistair Inglis Centre for Staff Learning and Educational Development, Victoria University Melbourne, Australia Abstract Managing quality processes become critically important for higher education institutions generally, but especially for institutions involved in open and distance learning. In Australia, managers of centers responsible for open and distance learning have identified two frameworks that potentially offer ways of conceiving of the application of quality processes: the Quality Framework published in Inglis, Ling, and Joosten (1999); and the Benchmarking Framework published in McKinnon, Walker, and Davis (2000).

However, managers who have been considering applying one or other framework within their institutional contexts have had to face the issue of how they should choose between, or combine the use, of these frameworks. Part of their dilemma lies in distinguishing among the related functions of quality improvement, quality assurance, and benchmarking. Introduction. EDEN FELLOWS DAY: Looking into a history of the future. Chapter8. Chapter 16. Chapter 16 The Quality Dilemma in Online Education Nancy K. Parker Athabasca University With the proliferation of online learning providers and the challenges presented by the distance education sector to state regulators and accrediting bodies, it is not surprising that “buyer beware” is the watchword for students, institutions, and public agencies alike. Purveyors of online learning programs maybe inclined to attribute a lack of broad acceptance among their colleagues to the paradigm shift that higher education has been undergoing in the past 15 years.

After a discussion of the contexts of quality assurance activities in higher education in general, and of the competing paradigms highlighted by online learning, this chapter examines quality standards that have been proposed for the delivery of online instruction in four jurisdictions. Top If these observations hold true, then it is fair to ask why one would engage in a discussion of quality in relation to any form of education. BuildingTrust. Flying not flapping: a strategic framework for e-learning and pedagogical innovation in higher education institutions | Salmon. Flying not flapping: a strategic framework for e-learning and pedagogical innovation in higher education institutions Abstract E-learning is in a rather extraordinary position. It was born as a ‘tool’ and now finds itself in the guise of a somewhat wobbly arrow of change. In practice, changing the way thousands of teachers teach, learners learn, innovation is promoted and sustainable change in traditional institutions is achieved across hundreds of different disciplines is a demanding endeavour that will not be achieved by learning technologies alone.

It involves art, craft and science as well as technology. This paper attempts to show how it might be possible to capture and model complex strategic processes that will help move the potential of e-learning in universities to a new stage of development. It offers the example of a four-quadrant model created as a framework for an e-learning strategy. Article Metrics PDF Downloads 473This journal Metrics powered by PLOS ALM Refbacks. T-costs. 0811R. In their new book The Innovative University Clayton Christensen and Henry Eyring explore why higher education is heading for disruption. As budget deficits and healthcare costs squeeze government support for higher education, enrollments at traditional institutions will steadily shrink. This will force the education sector to major changes and the students will come out winners, as is typical when disruption reshapes an industry. InnovationManagement asked the writers to elaborate on trends in higher education and the way education is delivered to students.

Why did you decide to write this book? We’ve both spent much of our lives in universities, and while we’ve been richly blessed by what they do well, we’ve also spent a lot of time thinking about how they could do some things better. As budget deficits and healthcare costs squeeze government support for higher education, enrollments at traditional institutions will steadily shrink. That depends on how traditional providers respond. MegaTrends in university teaching: global perspectives on ODL - The Lincoln Repository.
