Science Explorer Geodesic Gumdrops

http://www.exploratorium.edu/science_explorer/geo_gumdrops.html Stretching and squashing -- some basic principles Even though your gumdrop structures are standing absolutely still, their parts are always pulling and pushing on each other. Structures remain standing because some parts are being pulled or stretched and other parts are being pushed or squashed.

Students and teachers will find curricular resources (information, content...) to help them learn about this topic. In addition, there are also links to instructional materials (lesson plans) which will help teachers provide instruction in this theme. Please read our disclaimer.

Physics Balsa Bridge Building Contest: balsabridge.com ...next contest: May 2 2006

Matt Sullivan with his award-winning bridge at the trophy presentation ceremony. The trophy, held here by sponsoring teacher Peter Vogel, has been presented annually since 1981. APEGBC, the professional body that governs engineering in this province, has been a contest sponsor since 1999. In 2001 we welcomed Dofasco Steel as a sponsor. For 2002 we welcomed CSCE, the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, the UBC Engineering Physics program, GlobalIntercom.com and SFU's School of Engineering Science as sponsors. More recently we have added Buckland and Taylor, one of Canada's most famous bridge design firms, SRC Engineering, Collings Johnston Inc., The British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) and the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC.

Teachers' Domain: Arch Bridge

http://www.teachersdomain.org/9-12/sci/phys/mfw/bbarch/index.html The simplest type of bridge is called a beam bridge. As the name implies, beam bridges are made up of long horizontal supports, called beams, which stretch from one side of a gap to the other. These supports are anchored to solid ground at each end and carry the entire weight of the bridge deck and its loads. Because of this, the distance a beam bridge can span is limited unless it is reinforced underneath by evenly spaced vertical columns, called piers. In a long bridge, however, the piers obstruct the flow of water and traffic along a waterway.

TKI - Our Community Unit Plan

'The social sciences learning area is about how societies work and how people can participate as critical, active, informed, and responsible citizens.' ( The New Zealand Curriculum , 2007)
The unit I have developed is on families. It is based in part on the "Family Photos" theme from the Houghton Mifflin reading curriculum my second grade class at Lister Elementary (Tacoma, WA) uses. The unit ran for three weeks. This unit is primarily a reading unit, though writing, grammar, social studies and art will also be dealt with during the course of the theme unit. Two stories from the curriculum will be read: "Clean Your Room, Harvey Moon!" and "Now One Foot, Now the Other."

Families Theme Unit Introduction

In this unit, students will create drawings of their own homes and those that they imagine might be found in a foreign country. Students will also conduct research on that particular foreign country using a variety of sources and exchange artwork and questions with another group of students in that foreign country. In developing our lessons and activities, we made some assumptions about the hardware and software that would be available in the classroom for teachers who visit the LETSNet Website.

Art & Buildings Across the Planet

Two structures with which children are familiar are bridges and towers. Review this background information to introduce a few concepts to your class. You may also want to explore other activities related to our school program . Why do we need bridges?
