Last week was my first week working at TopQuadrant , and I spent three days in a class given by one of my new co-workers, Scott Henninger. I only had a skeletal idea of what the components of TopBraid Suite did before, and now that I have a better idea, I'm very impressed. (I may be wrong on one or two details below, but I'm still the new guy.) I had the impression that the core original product, TopBraid Composer, was mostly for designing and editing RDFS/OWL schemas and ontologies.

This is isn’t that – it’s a quick guide to rapid prototyping of an RDF Schema, that can be used, and reused. All these steps are iterative. 1. Define your scope, purpose and competency questions. Add them as an annotation on the ontology – so when someone wants to reuse it, they know why you made those design decisions and helps them evaluate whether they want to use it.

I’m in a session called Taming the Open World, being run by Tim Swanson of Semantic Arts. I’m particularly interested in understanding how we can develop open world applications and issue 2 of Nodalities contains an article by Nadeem Shabir on just this issue. Since I have power and wifi which are both in scarce supply, I thought I’d take the opportunity to liveblog the session. http://blogs.talis.com/nodalities/2008/05/lessons-for-ontology-writers.php

Mylyn makes tasks a first class part of the IDE, integrates rich and offline editing for ALM tools, and monitors your programming activity to create a "task context" that focuses your workspace and automatically links all relevant artifacts to the task-at-hand. This puts the information you need at your fingertips and improves productivity by reducing information overload, facilitating multitasking and easing the sharing of expertise.
