A few days earlier, French police responded to a bomb threat by closing the symbol of the city. At the same time the United States government issued a warning for Americans traveling to Europe to be vigilant.
While this warning contained nothing specific, it nonetheless gave me and my party a bit of concern and raised our level of what you might call situational awareness, a bit higher.
