What’s left?

What’s left?

Becoming Animal – David Abram The Story of B – Daniel Quinn. Ragged Trousered Philosopher. I met god the other day. I know what you're thinking. How the hell did you know it was god? Well, I'll explain as we go along, but basically he convinced me by having all, and I do mean ALL, the answers. Every question I flung at him he batted back with a plausible and satisfactory answer. Which is odd, because I'm still an atheist and we even agree on that! It all started on the 8.20 back from Paddington. What did he look like? Well not what you might have expected that's for sure. 'Anyone sitting here? ' 'Help yourself' I replied. Sits down, relaxes, I ignore and back to the correspondence on genetically modified crops entering the food chain... Train pulls out and a few minutes later he speaks. 'Can I ask you a question?

' Fighting to restrain my left eyebrow I replied 'Yes' in a tone which was intended to convey that I might not mind one question, and possibly a supplementary, but I really wasn't in the mood for a conversation. 'Why don't you believe in god? ' The Bastard! 'Who am I? ' 'Stottle.

7 Extraordinary Books You Need to Read to Become Ecoliterate. Complex networks and their unpredictable nature are rapidly transforming the world around us. The challenge is to learn to live with life, because we are embedded in it. We are systems, nested within systems, nested within systems. Luckily, great minds have seen this ‘crisis of perception’ coming and they have shared their thoughts with us. Thoughts that are inspiring, sometimes shaking the ground beneath our feet and sometimes giving us hope-filled vistas on the future. What is Ecoliteracy? An ecoliterate is someone who has learned (to some degree, in some way) that human life is embedded within larger ecosystems that provide the conditions for it to develop. The (aspiring) ecoliterate could, in my opinion, come a long way in creating his own understanding of living systems, by reading these 7 classic books. 1. To recapitulate: Wallace, B. Alan - Attention Revolution. 5 Mind-Blowing Books That Are Worth The Struggle To Read. Books are obstacle courses for the mind. By confronting us with paradigm shifting ideas they challenge us to stretch our capacity for understanding. And when we succeed, they will open up a world which we couldn’t see before. And then, in this unfamiliar world, we find ourselves having new thoughts and breaking new rules, using new magic and exploring new possibilities. And finally we must come to the conclusion, when we absorb ideas too big for our former selves, we change and we grow and burst like a butterfly out of our old shells that don’t serve us no more.

I remember the first time I got my hands on a self-improvement book. I was baffled. At that moment I realized my fate was not set in stone. I could become my own drill master and coach. The books I read would set out the training course for me to overcome. All I had to do was listen to that voice that aspired to climb higher and higher. Every time I committed to a new challenge I knew it was going to be outside my comfort zone, but after enough iterations, I also knew it will not just be part of my repertoire, it will be part of me. Anyone that has tried a psychedelic drug know that it’s impossible to fully explain the experience to someone who hasn’t tried one. The entertainment industry completely misrepresents these experiences with dragons flying out of people’s faces and walls melting into nothing, which never occur even with strong doses.

So, here is my best attempt at explaining the psychedelic experience. I’d like to start this off with an anecdote from Ram Dass, who was talking about working with a member of the anti-drug coalition on a book about LSD. In choosing pictures for the book, they agreed on only one: “It was a picture of a guy on the floor, looking at some spilled Coca-Cola.
