Renewables and energy. Considering future generations - sustainability in theory and practice. Christine Carmody1 The concept of sustainability has become increasingly popular in international and domestic debate on social progress; it is also a key dimension of the Treasury wellbeing framework. However, confusion surrounds the concept, its measurement and its application in decision-making. Defined as maintaining or increasing wellbeing between generations, sustainability requires a focus on aggregate stocks of capital. Key features of the sustainability problem are uncertainty about the future, thresholds and substitutability between capital stocks. It is these issues, rather than theoretical paradigms, that are of practical importance to decision-makers.

Introduction ‘Because we can expect future generations to be richer than we are, no matter what we do about resources, asking us to refrain from using resources now so that future generations can have them later is like asking the poor to make gifts to the rich.’ Will future generations be better off? Chart 1. Chart 2. Where and . Renewables are getting cheaper all the time — here's why. Opinion By Bonnie McBain, University of Newcastle Updated The stars are aligning for Australia to transition to 100 per cent renewable electricity.

Our fossil fuel infrastructure is ageing, which means we will soon need to invest in new power generators. New technologies such as battery storage could revolutionise long-standing business models. Our latest research, which corroborates previous work, shows the technology already exists to solve many of the remaining questions around technological capability. For instance, the fact that wind and solar don't generate electricity when the wind isn't blowing and the sun isn't shining can be dealt with by installing a network of diverse generators across a wide area, or by increasing our use of energy storage. One of the biggest remaining barriers to transition is cost. The cost of building renewable energy The cost of renewable energy is highly variable across the world and even within Australia. Beyond building But this also poses challenges. Port Augusta solar project needs $100 million in government funding to shine, firm says.

Posted The proponents of a $650 million solar thermal project planned for Port Augusta in South Australia say it will be difficult to get off the ground without government funding. United States-based Solar Reserve chief executive officer Kevin Smith on Monday visited a site near the Stuart Highway where his company wants to build a solar thermal plant. "It's a perfect site," he said. "I mean, we were joking it looks very similar to the site we built in Nevada. " A solar plant at Port Augusta would use more than 10,000 billboard-sized mirrors to concentrate the sun's rays to generate heat. The energy would be stored in molten salt so the plant could produce baseload power 24 hours a day like a traditional coal-fired generator.

Mr Smith was keen to provide a contract for 75 per cent of the State Government's long-term power needs after it announced last week it wanted to introduce a new competitor to the market and reduce prices. "We would require generation by the end of 2017," he said. Energy - United Nations Sustainable Development. EnergyFlorencia Soto Nino2016-08-17T17:44:54+00:00 Share this story, choose your platform! Energy is central to nearly every major challenge and opportunity the world faces today.

Be it for jobs, security, climate change, food production or increasing incomes, access to energy for all is essential. Sustainable energy is opportunity – it transforms lives, economies and the planet. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is leading a Sustainable Energy for All initiative to ensure universal access to modern energy services, improve efficiency and increase use of renewable sources. One in five people still lacks access to modern electricity3 billion people rely on wood, coal, charcoal or animal waste for cooking and heatingEnergy is the dominant contributor to climate change, accounting for around 60 per cent of total global greenhouse gas emissionsReducing the carbon intensity of energy is a key objective in long-term climate goals.

Reforms to the Renewable Energy Target The Australian Government has settled on reforms to the Renewable Energy Target, following careful consideration and extensive consultations. The new target for large-scale generation of 33,000 GWh in 2020 will double the amount of large-scale renewable energy being delivered by the scheme compared to current levels and means that about 23.5 per cent of Australia’s electricity generation in 2020 will be from renewable sources.

Certainty and growth for renewable energy - media release 23 June 2015 Amending legislation to implement the Government’s reforms to the Renewable Energy Target (RET) was agreed to by the Australian Parliament on 23 June 2015. The package of reforms includes measures that will provide certainty to industry, encourage further investment in renewable energy and better reflect market conditions. The RET has been amended to: Large-scale Renewable Energy Target Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme RET Scheme Legislation Solar Towns.

Cambodia | Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) Untitled. Titled. Energy - United Nations Sustainable Development. Communities are taking renewable power into their own hands. Australia, like much of the rest of the world, is in the midst of an energy transition. With falling electricity demand and the uptake of household solar panels in just under 1.4 million homes, the most important question is not whether this transition is happening, but how we manage it to maximise the benefit to all Australians. Community energy is one of the answers. Community energy projects are those in which a community comes together to develop, deliver and benefit from sustainable energy. They can involve energy supply projects such as renewable energy installations and storage, and energy reduction projects such as energy efficiency and demand management.

Community energy projects allow individuals to be involved in clean energy beyond the bounds of their own homes or businesses and in so doing bring a range of benefits and opportunities for their household and for the wider community. Australia’s Energy Consumption Australians spend about $50 billion on energy each year, while energy exports earn more than $24 billion a year. The sector involves massive, long-lived capital items such as electricity plants, transmission lines, coal, oil and gas production facilities, pipelines, refineries, wind farms as well as a multitude of smaller facilities such as wholesale and retail distribution sites.

The production and use of energy comes with a major environmental challenge. Energy is the largest single contributor to global emissions of greenhouse gases. Transport emissions are a significant source of urban air pollution. Demands for energy in Australia is projected to increase by 50 per cent by 2020, and the energy industry has estimated that at least $37 billion in energy investments will be required by 2020 to meet the nation’s energy needs. Developing Australia’s abundant low-cost energy resources is a key to our future prosperity.

Guide to Community-Owned Renewable Energy for Victorians The Victorian Government has produced a guide to give communities information about developing community-owned renewable energy projects.

It is a resource for community groups that are considering a renewable energy project and those that are already in the process of establishing a project. The guide consolidates existing knowledge and resources and provides links to further information and advice. It provides practical pointers on critical commercial, technical, governance and regulatory aspects of renewable energy projects, including a wealth of useful information on identifying an appropriate business model, selecting the most suitable technology and managing a project.
