Renewables and energy. Considering future generations - sustainability in theory and practice. Christine Carmody1 The concept of sustainability has become increasingly popular in international and domestic debate on social progress; it is also a key dimension of the Treasury wellbeing framework.

Considering future generations - sustainability in theory and practice

However, confusion surrounds the concept, its measurement and its application in decision-making. Defined as maintaining or increasing wellbeing between generations, sustainability requires a focus on aggregate stocks of capital. Key features of the sustainability problem are uncertainty about the future, thresholds and substitutability between capital stocks. It is these issues, rather than theoretical paradigms, that are of practical importance to decision-makers.

Renewables are getting cheaper all the time — here's why. Opinion By Bonnie McBain, University of Newcastle Updated The stars are aligning for Australia to transition to 100 per cent renewable electricity.

Renewables are getting cheaper all the time — here's why

Our fossil fuel infrastructure is ageing, which means we will soon need to invest in new power generators. New technologies such as battery storage could revolutionise long-standing business models. Our latest research, which corroborates previous work, shows the technology already exists to solve many of the remaining questions around technological capability. For instance, the fact that wind and solar don't generate electricity when the wind isn't blowing and the sun isn't shining can be dealt with by installing a network of diverse generators across a wide area, or by increasing our use of energy storage. One of the biggest remaining barriers to transition is cost. Port Augusta solar project needs $100 million in government funding to shine, firm says.

Posted The proponents of a $650 million solar thermal project planned for Port Augusta in South Australia say it will be difficult to get off the ground without government funding.

Port Augusta solar project needs $100 million in government funding to shine, firm says

United States-based Solar Reserve chief executive officer Kevin Smith on Monday visited a site near the Stuart Highway where his company wants to build a solar thermal plant. "It's a perfect site," he said. Energy - United Nations Sustainable Development. EnergyFlorencia Soto Nino2016-08-05T15:54:03+00:00 Share this story, choose your platform!

Energy - United Nations Sustainable Development

Energy is central to nearly every major challenge and opportunity the world faces today. Be it for jobs, security, climate change, food production or increasing incomes, access to energy for all is essential. Sustainable energy is opportunity – it transforms lives, economies and the planet. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is leading a Sustainable Energy for All initiative to ensure universal access to modern energy services, improve efficiency and increase use of renewable sources.

One in five people still lacks access to modern electricity3 billion people rely on wood, coal, charcoal or animal waste for cooking and heatingEnergy is the dominant contributor to climate change, accounting for around 60 per cent of total global greenhouse gas emissionsReducing the carbon intensity of energy is a key objective in long-term climate goals. The new target for large-scale generation of 33,000 GWh in 2020 will double the amount of large-scale renewable energy being delivered by the scheme compared to current levels and means that about 23.5 per cent of Australia’s electricity generation in 2020 will be from renewable sources. Certainty and growth for renewable energy - media release 23 June 2015 Amending legislation to implement the Government’s reforms to the Renewable Energy Target (RET) was agreed to by the Australian Parliament on 23 June 2015. Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) Untitled. Titled. Energy - United Nations Sustainable Development. Communities are taking renewable power into their own hands.

Australia, like much of the rest of the world, is in the midst of an energy transition.

Communities are taking renewable power into their own hands

With falling electricity demand and the uptake of household solar panels in just under 1.4 million homes, the most important question is not whether this transition is happening, but how we manage it to maximise the benefit to all Australians. New renewable energy play launches in Melbourne. Melbourne businesses, local councils and universities will pool resources to build new renewable energy plants under an innovative push to boost the supply of clean power to the city. To be launched on Monday, just as the Paris climate summit gets under way, the project is a first for Australia. At least a dozen backers will pool their electricity purchasing power with the aim of encouraging new wind or solar energy. Guide to Community-Owned Renewable Energy for Victorians The Victorian Government has produced a guide to give communities information about developing community-owned renewable energy projects. It is a resource for community groups that are considering a renewable energy project and those that are already in the process of establishing a project. The guide consolidates existing knowledge and resources and provides links to further information and advice. It provides practical pointers on critical commercial, technical, governance and regulatory aspects of renewable energy projects, including a wealth of useful information on identifying an appropriate business model, selecting the most suitable technology and managing a project.

There is a growing interest in renewable energy stocks in Australia. 95% of Australia’s energy is being generated by fossil fuels (coal, gas, oil). In August 2009 the Government in Australia implemented the Renewable Energy Target (RET) Scheme which is designed to deliver on the Australian Government’s commitment to boost Australia’s renewable energy production to 20% by the year 2020 through small and large scale renewable energy initiatives and commercial wind, solar and geothermal projects.

The energy market research firm Bloomberg New Energy Finance has predicted that the new policies will add 36bn dollars worth of new investment over the next 10 years in Australian renewable energy projects and technologies, an amount that rivals the 35.9bn dollars needed for the National Broadband Network (NBN). RPR FY2012 No.26 chapter 7. Theconversation. In Paris late last year, the countries of the world pledged to reduce emissions to keep global warming “well below a 2 degree Celsius” rise in global average temperatures compared with preindustrial levels. As an advanced economy, the U.S. is expected to lead in making the required emissions reductions, which would be roughly 80 percent by midcentury compared with 2005. This would entail moving a large portion of U.S. power generation off fossil fuels and shifting the majority of our vehicles to electric power. That’s a tall order. Most existing energy policies focus on the nearer term, and as yet there is no roadmap to achieve this 2°C limit – or even less aggressive targets for emissions cuts in the next 15 years. Australia's large-scale renewable energy industry has entered an investment freeze, with just one project securing finance in the past six months amid political uncertainty, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance.

The lone venture in the first three months of 2015 was worth just $6.6 million and following a complete drought during the December quarter, BNEF said. The project was a floating solar photovoltaic (PV) plant being developed in Jamestown, South Australia, by Infratech Industries. For the year to March, investment totalled $206.9 million, which was 90 per cent lower than the previous 12 months, the consultancy said.
