Last fall, 120 artists sent me their résumés. They were not applying for a job at the Foundation, nor was I creating a hard copy LinkedIn . Artists agreed to share this career documentation as part of a year-long celebration of the 30 th Anniversary of the McKnight Artist Fellowship program. In thinking about the history of the program, we were curious about concretes (What kind of things have artists been up to?) as well as questions grandiose (What patterns, trends, and threads are discernible in the records of artists’ livelihood?).

The team that scores the most goals may not win the Stanley Cup, so long as they accrue the most penalty minutes. That’s what I learned from this animated visualization by Bård Edlund . It’s a 16-headed hockey rink, tracking every single shot of the NHL’s 2012 playoffs, in the actual order they occurred (even accounting for games played simultaneously). It also tracks overall team penalties as a radial graph in the center of the rink--suitably spreading across the ice in red. As we all know now, the eighth-seeded Kings defied their record and clenched the cup.
In order to understand a religion, we can refer to its holy book, which establishes guidelines and principles for followers to adhere to. At the same time, followers, both radical and mild, interpret the holy text to provide a deeper and often more complex meaning of a particular verse, often to help explain issues that directly affect their personal beliefs. Unfortunately, people of one faith try to use the holy text of another faith to ridicule that faith or show its abominations by pointing to a particular text, often entirely out of context or misquoted. One such example is the Quran burning controversy stirred by Terry Jones in Florida. While claiming the Quran is a violent book of terror, Jones failed to make a comparison to the Bible, which also contains many violent passages. Looking at the opposite end of the spectrum, we are also curious about how each passage mentions love, tolerance and friendship.

We came across a blog post about the most common words used in band names, album names and song names which utilized Billboard Pop Charts between 1890 and 2008. Intrigued by the information displayed, we wanted to take our spin on how we would visualize word frequency in song titles between 1890 and early 2010 using ALL words in song titles used. Inspired by Boris Müller's Faust Faust poster , we wanted to give a sense of the volume of total words used in song titles using both size and a color spectrum to order each word from most frequent at the top to least frequent at the bottom.

We often think of scientific ideas, such as Darwin's theory of evolution, as fixed notions that are accepted as finished. In fact, Darwin's On the Origin of Species evolved over the course of several editions he wrote, edited, and updated during his lifetime.
