How to Make a Vintage Inspired Paper Crown

My girls enjoy putting together a pull-apart version of the New Orleans style King Cake (recipe HERE), and I get to indulge in my favorite all-time sweet treat, the French Galette des Rois (recipe HERE). Within each cake a charm is concealed. The guest who finds the charm in their piece of cake is the King or Queen and gets to wear a crown. Not just for January 6, a paper crown adorned with vintage paper, glitter and embellishments is an inexpensive, easy and wonderful craft for birthdays and other celebrations where you want to add a little whimsy and sparkle!

Ten minute no-sew recycled t-shirt bag!

I got a gig teaching a recycled t-shirt project at the library a few months ago, with a request for a recycled tee bag – the only bags I’d made from tees in the past had required sturdy sewing, and I didn’t want hand-sewing to be the only thing holding the bottom closed in a class version of the bags, so I started brainstorming about some kind of hand-sewing-friendly or no-sew bag idea…. and here’s what I came up with! The simplest version of these bags is great for smaller tees, or the more light-weight kind of girl-tees – just turn the bottom of the shirt into a drawstring and tie it closed! As you can see, even with a not huge tee, this will still leave a significant hole in the bottom of your bag, but for purposes like grocery shopping, this size hole shouldn’t really matter… But to make smaller holes, just make more than one of them! Easy recycley craft. So in an issue of readymade maybe 6 months ago, there was this tote bag project and the shape of the bag in the pattern picture (not on the online version) looked just like a tank top shape, which made me think…. hmm…. couldn’t you sew the bottom of a tank top closed and turn it into a super quick and easy bag?

But i never got around to trying it… Recycley skirt how-to part 3: simple sweatshirt skirts! Oookay this one has been on hold for awhile, so i’m happy to finally bring you the sweatshirt edition of my recycled skirts series! And to make up for the pause between projects, this one is actually 2 different designs! If you have a blank sweatshirt (or you don’t mind the image being upside down) you can make the skirt on the left (above), where the bottom of the sweatshirt becomes the waistband of the skirt. if you have a sweatshirt with an image you like, you can make the skirt on the right with the band around the bottom… if you want it longer, it’s not much more work, still super simple. chop the sleeves off straight up from the body… Shirt Cuff Wallet. Just wanted to share the upcycled wallet I made earlier this week.

Shirt Cuff Wallet

I was using some of the fabric from an old button-down shirt for other projects, and the odds and ends (cuffs, collar, buttons) always tend to be the hardest bits of clothing to recycle. I had been wanting a wallet upgrade - just a simple, good-looking outer shell with a cash pocket, to hold a photo sleeve / card holder I already had. It turned out that these particular shirt cuffs were the perfect width for the holder. I loved this plaid fabric and was totally tickled that the size worked out. I cut the cuff off above the hem, leaving it intact so I'd be able to use the button and buttonhole to close the wallet.

Less than an hour's worth of work, and bits and pieces of fabric I thought I'd have to throw away, and my cash and cards have a nifty new place to call home! 30 Creative Reuseable DIY Projects. Mists: Distress inks: Spoon ring tutorial. 1/22/12 Update: Many of you have been having trouble coming across sterling silver in your local thrift stores.

spoon ring tutorial

One place you can always find it is on ebay, but you will be paying more for the silverware. You should be able to find a sterling silver fork or spoon for about $10-$15 on ebay, so if you are having no luck and are really wanting to make a ring, I’d suggest shopping there.4/2/12 Update: For a printable of the instructions and to see the updated photo tutorial, click here.12/10/12 Update: To see video snippets of the tutorial, click here.
