IEnumerable<Cat> is a subtype of IEnumerable<Animal>, because the IEnumerable<T> type parameter T is covariant. Note how original subtyping of the interface's type parameter is preserved.Action<Cat> is a supertype of Action<Animal>, because the Action<T> type parameter T is contravariant (An Action<T> represents a first-class function expecting an argument of type T or sub-T). Note how the subtyping of T is reversed while encapsulated by an Action, but preserved once supplied as an argument to the underlying function.Neither IList<Cat> or IList<Animal> is a subtype of the other, because the IList<T> type parameter T is invariant. A programming language designer will consider variance when devising typing rules for e.g. arrays, inheritance, and generic datatypes.

By making type constructors covariant or contravariant instead of invariant, more programs will be accepted as well-typed. Within the type system of a programming language, a typing rule or a type constructor is:

You have an iPod but you are fed up with music and want to listen to a podcast instead. Your recommendations, please. This morning I listened to Radio 5 Live's Fighting Talk. Fantastic. A colleague spotted me grinning on the way to work and wondered if I had found some sort of spiritual salvation. But click on the iTunes top 40 and it is dominated by the BBC. But do a search for "movies" or "music" or "football" or "cricket" and a whole host of podcasts come up, some that I have heard of - including those by my colleagues at the Guardian - but many that I have not.

I want to know your podcast hidden gems, the stuff that you listen to on your journey into work, out of work, or just sitting around at home. If all goes to plan, I'll listen to as many of them as I can and report back. Think of it as a bit like Your 100 Favourite Tunes, but with podcasts instead. What’s Your Favourite Podcast? I have requirements for about three hours worth of podcasts each week, because that’s the total amount of time I’m at the gym. Unfortunately, my current carefully-selected list of podcasts always falls a little short of three hours.

Here’s what I listen to religiously: CBC Radio Dispatches – “Dispatches features documentaries and reports by CBC Radio’s correspondents and other journalists on assignment outside of Canada.”BBC From Our Own Correspondent – Probably my favourite. It’s the journalist’s story behind the story, always superbly written and fascinating.New York Times Movie Reviews – Great, but way too short.New York Times The Ethicist – See above.Savage Love Podcast – Surprisingly funny, and not remotely safe for work.Slate’s Explainer and Daily Podcasts – Both June Thomas and Andy Bowers have fantastic reading voices.

In the right mood, I’ll also listen to the CBC’s Best of Ideas and a short story by Cory Doctorow. What’s your favourite podcast? The 15 Best Miramax Films - Film School Rejects. Today, the indie world and the film world at large lost a giant in the field, watching Disney close the doors and turn the lights off on Miramax. As sad a day like today is, and as uncertain as the future is, we can still hold on to the memories.

Most of them are now on Blu-ray. Or at least Laser Disc (because we all own one). Without further tears in our eyes, we’d like to remember Miramax for their 15 Best Films. If you’re like me and Rob Hunter, your rental queue is already full. 15. The Pitch: Even if Rob Hunter doesn’t think Larry Clark’s harsh film about drug and sexual abandon amongst the youth in NYC is well acted, he’s wrong, and the movie is brilliant and challenging. 14.

The Pitch: You probably haven’t seen this odd and creepy little flick, but if you have consider yourself one of the lucky few. 13. The Pitch: This film is mostly known for its twist, which is a shame, because the entire film is a thing of beauty. 12. 11. Critique.org. Network speeding up I'm switching the connection over to a new, shiny 10X faster network because of all the load. There might be bits of downtime as your boxes learn new addresses and things. Announcing ReAnimus Press Nonsensical Fees Voila! 99 of the best Windows freeware programs you may not know of. Due to the popularity of my previous article on Help Desk Geek entitled 99 ways to make your computer blazingly fast, I’ve decided to write another list post with 99 items, but this time on Windows freeware programs that you may have not heard of. If you search for “best freeware programs” or “top freeware apps”, you’ll get lots of lists, but mostly with programs everyone has already heard of: AVG anti-virus, 7-zip, Firefox, OpenOffice, etc., etc. That’s all nice and fine, but what about all those little gems programs that work great, but don’t get all the headlines?

In this article, I will try my best to mention as many small name freeware programs as I can that can help make you more productive! It’s a long list, so feel free to bookmark it and refer to it later on. These are written in no particular order! Again, I’m sure there are hundreds of programs that I won’t mention, so if you feel I’ve really missed a great program, mention the name of the app and what it does in the comments!
