Design strategy and Participatory Innovation | Interactive Institute. Frog collective action toolkit. Welcome to the Virtual Crash Course in Design Thinking. Welcome to the d.school’s Virtual Crash Course resource page! We know not everyone can make a trip to the d.school to experience how we teach design thinking. So, we created this online version of one of our most frequently sought after learning tools. Using the video, handouts, and facilitation tips below, we will take you step by step through the process of hosting or participating in a 90 minute design challenge. If you choose to participate, in 90 minutes you will be taken through a full design cycle by participating in The Gift-Giving Project. This is a fast-paced project where participants pair up to interview each other, identify real needs, and develop a solution to “redesign the gift-giving experience” for their partner.

NO PREVIOUS DESIGN EXPERIENCE REQUIRED. Through this experience we hope you will take away some of the basic principles of Design Thinking and start to adapt them into your personal and professional routines. Below, you will find three sections: Gear Up! Untitled. While design thinking is by no means a catchall solution, it is nonetheless a powerful and transformative perspective and toolset The impact of design thinking in education is two-fold: First, by requiring the use of multiple lenses when looking at a problem, design thinking demonstrates that bringing together seemingly disparate perspectives can often be the key to finding effective solutions.

This encourages students to be as well versed and ‘literate’ in as many subjects as possible, as they begin to understand that the most complex problems are often best solved through an interdisciplinary approach. Second, and perhaps more importantly, design thinking emphasizes that collaboration and the use of outside resources are critical to both the learning and problem solving process—a notion that will be valuable to their scholarly, professional and personal lives. Design thinking teaches students that the best solutions are those that are empathy-driven and end-user-centric. What Does ‘Design Thinking’ Look Like in School? Getty Images Design thinking can seem a bit abstract to teachers. It’s not part of traditional teacher training programs and has only recently entered the teachers’ vernacular. Design thinking is an approach to learning that includes considering real-world problems, research, analysis, conceiving original ideas, lots of experimentation, and sometimes building things by hand.

But few schools have the time or wherewithal to integrate these processes into the school day. But at the Nueva School in Hillsborough, Calif., a small, private school for grades K-8, design thinking is part of every class and subject, and has been integrated throughout the curriculum with support from a dedicated Innovation Lab or the iLab. “It’s really a way to make people more effective and to supercharge their innate capabilities,” said Kim Saxe, director of Nueva’s iLab, and one of the champions of design thinking.
