Stephanie talked about the Apple Classroom of Tomorrow (ACOT) study from 1985-97, which looked at moving from instruction to construction of knowledge and measured teacher's comfort with technology. Now, however, the focus shouldn't be on the technology but on what you do with the technology - and what it can do for you. Stephanie showed a graphic of the technology use continuum, moving from substitution to redefinition: Substitution involves doing the same thing as you would do without the technology without any modification of the assignment, for example typing out the work using a word processor rather than handwriting. Augmentation - involves some functional improvement but is still a direct tool substitute - again the assignment is not changed, but perhaps some of the built in tools such as the thesaurus, word count, spell check etc might be used.

In the first two terms of implementing an iPad programme, Longfield Academy in Kent have noticed a great impact on teaching and learning. Research carried out on behalf of Naace and supported by 9ine consulting is published here.

It’s really exciting to be able to announce our research into the use of iPads. After a successful implementation at Longfield Academy in Kent and two terms of embedded use, the research shows some incredibly positive impacts on teaching and learning. The report on the research, carried out on behalf of Naace and supported by 9ine Consulting is available below. It outlines the conclusions of one of the most extensive studies so far undertaken into the use of tablets for learning. As one teacher put it, “The iPads have revolutionised teaching”, with appropriate use of iPads helping to enhance learning across the curriculum and encouraging collaborative learning. Please note: the tablet implementation surveys here include the questions used in this research. Lateline - 17/09/2012: Parents charged hundreds of dollars for free Apps. Transcript EMMA ALBERICI, PRESENTER: There's a call tonight for urgent regulation of so-called free apps that end up costing parents hundreds of dollars on their iTunes accounts. It's known as an in app purchase, introduced by Apple two years ago. At first, the app is free, but children are given the option of purchasing virtual diamonds, coins and other items as they play games. The Coalition's chief pollster and strategist, Mark Textor, has told Lateline parents should refuse to pay the iTunes bills because children are effectively being taught how to gamble. Suzanne Smith has this exclusive report. SUZANNE SMITH, REPORTER: Sylvie is your typical nine-year-old girl. One of the apps that enticed Sylvie to spend lots of real money is called Top Girl. 1. 2. 3. 4.
