Felt Initial Notebook Tutorial {Gift Ideas}

Yes, I’ll add a little felt to just about anything, and today I’m sharing how I made these sweet little felt initial notebooks. Button and String Mini Journal. I've been trying to decide on what to make my hubby for a Valentine's gift and decided that I wanted to write more than a letter - so I decided to make him a mini journal / album / book of things I love about him, different memories I have of our life together, things like that (hopefully he won't read this before next weekend ;)).

Button and String Mini Journal

I found this fab tutorial awhile back about button and string closure and somehow wanted to incorporate it, thus I came up with this fun journal - it has a vintage feel - the button and string closure, and a bunch of found papers inside, including old school writing pages, graph paper and strategically cut magazine pages. The fun thing about these journals is you can use them for any occasion- to record a special event, to keep as a personal journal, to write a note to a friend, many possibilities!

Take your cover sheet and score a line 1.5" in from the right side (see below). Then score a line 4.75" in from the left side (see below). Voila! Vintage Sheet Sketch Journal. I wanted to throw together a super quick journal with blank pages (much like this journal, but with blank pages) that could be used for throwing in a purse, taking along, and using for sketches.

Vintage Sheet Sketch Journal

I decided to use a vintage sheet (and a vintage button), lined with white fabric for a cover, a button and tie closure, and blank recycled paper pages. This seriously took me about a half hour start to finish (including cutting and pressing the fabric). So it's super quick (read: done during naptime :)). *I am having some camera lens issues right now, some of the images are not the best - my apologies ;) Supplies: + 9"x12" piece of vintage sheet fabric (or any fabric) + 9"x12" piece of white fabric + large button + 7" piece of decorative ribbon + 10 sheets blank recycled computer paper + needle and thread + sewing machine, scissors (for trimming) + butterfly document clips (to hold pages in place while sewing, not pictured) Begin by sewing the button to the vintage sheet.

Voila! Rustic leather sketchbook. We're going to be posting tutorials for stocking stuffer gifts for children every day this week.

Rustic leather sketchbook

I loved opening stocking gifts when I was a kid but now I am a mom responsible for filling that stocking up and I don't enjoy the process as much. Filling the stocking always seems to be a last-minute chore where I spend too much money and buy too much plastic junk and candy. So this year, I am working ahead, using materials I already have in my studio, to make gifts for my boys and Laura's boys to put in their stockings.

This first tutorial is the most complicated, but also makes a nice gift for almost anyone- it's a little rustic leather sketchbook. My boys are always sketching something or writing down potions and spells, this 32-page sketchbook will serve well for anything they come up with. Now I am not a book maker by any means, but I managed to make a sturdy little journal and you can make one too. You will have four little booklets. Cut it out and fold in half crossways.
