Sublime Magazine Article (Art & Philosophy Issue)

The irony being that I was photographing No Ghost Just a Shell initiated by Pierre Hyghe and Philippe Parreno, an artwork exploring the subject of replication and intellectual copyrights. They had purchased the copyright for the image of Annlee, a Japanese anime figure (from Ghost in the Shell) and invited artists to use the image free of charge in their own video creations. All life is based upon reproduction. But life’s idea of copying is far from (only) mechanical. Life’s copying began with our molecular progenitors in a primordial soup and has been rushing ever since onwards and upwards, asymptotically towards us - and also presumably past us to some destination unknown. Let’s call the alternative to this living, evolving form of copying: ‘dead copying’. In psychological terms dead copying is the enemy of feeling alive. I find Web 2.0 increasingly confusing as a label; no surprise there.

Lorcan Dempsey's weblog: The two ways of Web 2.0

This is not just because of its essential vagueness, but because I think it tends to be used in a couple of very different ways. Where this happens there is bound to be some confusion. Schematically, I will use the labels 'diffusion' and 'concentration' for these two ways. diffusion is probably the more dominant of the two. Here it covers a range of tools and techniques which create richer connectivity between people, applications and data; which support writers as well as readers; which provide richer presentation environments. Concentration is a major characteristic of our network experience, which often involves major gravitational hubs (google, amazon, flickr, facebook, propertyfinder.com). Interestingly, if you trace Tim O'Reilly's writings on Web 2.0 since the publication of his major defining article you see an emphasis on what I have called 'concentration' come through.

Google and Plaxo joining are a positive, however given that both have previously joined together for platforms such as OpenSocial it’s not that significant, but Facebook is another matter.
