From a distance, scaffolding looks like a maze of criss-crossing steel pipes that encircles a building. But peer closely and you will realize that complex and precision engineering is at work behind the lattice. It is believed that scaffolding originated in ancient North Africa and China. A Greek wine cup, also known as a kylix and dating back to the fifth century, contains an image of a statue of a warrior within a scaffolding. Scaffolding today is mainly made of metal pipes.

Mighty Optical Illusions

After deadly violence erupted during protests in Tahrir Square, Egypt last year, leaving 50 protestors dead, the military ordered walls be built around the heart of where the political activities occurred. Now Downtown Cairo locals must wander through a maze of barriers just to get around their own neighborhoods. To fight the barriers, Egyptian graffiti artists arranged a “No Walls” protest where they painted the walls with murals depicting the street hidden behind the blockades. Almost every wall in the area was painted with a mural like this one. Flickr user Mosa’aberising took photos of an achievement that took the dedicated artists over three days to complete.

At the top of 360 feet tall Victoria Falls there is a natural rock pool, called Devil's Pool, where the water is relatively calm. From September to December, when the water level is low, you can swim in Devil's Pool. The pictures are bound to make you just a little nervous. Or a lot. This definitely looks photoshopped but actually it's a life-size photographic work based on the original building in Paris, printed on canvas, enhanced with bas-relief. It shelters the renovation of an Hausmannian building during the year 2007.
