And, unlike any other planet, we have only one. If something the size of the moon were put on the earth, it would cover most of the United States: That picture is of a full moon, but that is not how we usually see it. The terms used for the different phases of the moon are pretty familiar to us, except for one, "gibbous. " Then what we see gets bigger and the moon becomes a 'waxing' (getting bigger) crescent. Remember Galileo's drawing of what he thought the moon looked like? He showed two sides. The moon does spin on its own axis. Here is a picture of the side of the moon that we see, from some strong telescopes: The bright spot at the bottom with streaks coming out of it is not the 'south pole' of the moon, but is the crater Tycho.

As we come closer, we can see something a little bit strange: there is a mountain in the middle of it: The Moon - Bob the Alien's Tour of the Solar System. The Moon is Earth's only natural satellite, and is the second brightest object in the sky after the Sun.

The Moon - Bob the Alien's Tour of the Solar System

It is larger than the dwarf planet Pluto, and the fourteenth largest object in the Solar System. Unlike Earth, the Moon's surface is very old, and the craters which are seen all over its surface have been there for billions of years. From Earth, only one side of the Moon can be seen. This is because Earth's pull of gravity on the Moon is so strong that it prevents the Moon from spinning freely on its axis. Instead, it is pulled around Earth, taking 27.3 days to orbit Earth, and 27.3 days to turn on its axis. Unlike the Sun, the Moon does not produce its own light. A Crescent Moon. Amateur radio information HF, VHF, EME

Many amateurs have asked what it takes to build an EME system. On this page we will have information and links to a lot of sites that have the details that you might need to start or to equip an existing site with a transmitter / receiver. We will also link to some video feeds of EME contacts and a site that lets you play with the output of an EME receiver. Listen to EME One of our favorite sites for EME reception is located at Dwingeloo The Netherlands. More WebSDR receivers can be found here: There are links to almost everything EME here: Building a Site To start our list of links, we will look at a site being built by KL7UW. Climate Change, Deforestation, Biomes and Ocean Currents, Plankton, Endangered Species - Earth Web Site. Click for more detail Thermohaline Change Evidence is growing that the thermohaline current may be slowed or stopped by cold fresh water inputs to the Arctic and North Atlantic oceans.

This could occur if global warming is sufficient to cause large scale melting of arctic sea ice and the Greenland ice sheet. Such a change in the current may be gradual (over centuries) or very rapid (over a few years). Either would cause planet wide changes in climate. This effect may be part of what starts and stops the ice ages. "Diatoms (a kind of phytoplankton) are estimated to "scrub" roughly as much CO2 from the atmosphere each year as all the world's rainforests. "Net primary productivity is the mass of plant material produced each year on land and in the oceans by photosynthesis using energy from sunlight. Biodiversity is the variety of life found at all levels of biological organization, ranging from individuals and populations to species, communities and ecosystems.
