Getting started in LSL scripting in Second Life

This is the language all scripts in Second LIfe are written in. Its structure is based on Java and C. Scripts in Second Life are a set of instructions that can be placed inside any object in the world, or any object worn by an avatar, but not inside an avatar. They are written with a built-in editor/compiler which we will access in step 2. One thing that makes LSL unique is it's heavy emphasis on "States" and "Events".

An event can be thought of as a "Trigger". Default { touch_start(integer total_number) { llSay(0,"Hello World"); } } Scripts can make an object move, listen, talk, operate as a vehicle or weapon, change colour, size or shape. The most basic object in Second Life is the "Prim" or primitive, the basic building block of all objects you can build in Second Life. Scripting is harder to learn than basic object manipulation, but is very rewarding once you make progress. About AVALON (2009-2010) - AVALON. About AVALON (2009-2010) - AVALON

This project aims to: create and test out exemplar tasks and activities designed to promote communication amongst the learning community. These materials will be based on work being carried out currently and these tasks and activities will be located in linked 2 & 3D environments and will be made available for future users. These will be accompanied by best practice guidelines for the users;create and pilot a training course for teachers who would like to extend their e-learning skills to include virtual teaching worlds. This course will run for the first time during the project and will be offered after the project has finished as an extension of the LANCELOT School as a separate validated and internationally recognized qualification.

EUROCALL/CALICO Joint Virtual Worlds SIG - EUROCALL

There have been several presentations on virtual worlds at recent EUROCALL and CALICO conferences, and hands-on workshops both for newcomers to Second Life and for more experienced users have also taken place. Screenshot of CALICO-EUROCALL Second Life HQ Following discussions between Graham Davies (EUROCALL), Randall Sadler (CALICO) and Thom Thibeault (CALICO) in early 2009, it was decided to approach EUROCALL and CALICO members with a proposal to create a joint EUROCALL/CALICO Virtual Worlds Special Interest Group (VW SIG) for teachers of modern foreign languages and English as a foreign language. A meeting therefore took place at the EUROCALL 2009 conference and it was agreed that a joint EUROCALL/CALICO VW SIG should be established, managed by Graham Davies on behalf of EUROCALL and Randall Sadler on behalf of CALICO.

Learning2gether with EdLC and Edunation: Randall Sadler on Holodecks in Second Life

As my travel plans had been uncertain I didn’t have any particular plans for Learning2gether on this day, but I had the great pleasure of attending this live event in Second Life, which would have been after midnight where I live in UAE but occurred late evening in Belgium. In this event I had the great pleasure of following Randall Sadler through his demonstration of holodeck software he is using and what he can do with it in Second Life.

The workshop was pitched at people with greater skills in SL than mine, but it was fascinating observing the potential of being able to change your surroundings at a whim, and to follow the crowd as the avatars marveled at the incredible builds. Dr. Hopefully, we’ll find an embed of the recording of this event to place here. EdLC Earlier this week. Collentine.
