By itself the second retrospective disc would be essential; with the addition of the first it becomes one of the best UK-borne electronic music compilations in recent memory. Real name Travis Stewart, Machinedrum has been a staple in New York’s underground since the early part of the last decade, when his debut album Now You Know (2001) was released on Miami’s Merck Records. In the years since, which have seen him release another eight full-lengths as well as myriad singles and mixtapes, Machinedrum has explored countless forms of dance music, hip-hop and more, as well as the extremes of both analog and digital musical forms. Last year, Stewart turned to Glasgow’s LuckyMe collective – a stable of artists who have always openly revered Machinedrum’s music – to release his Many Faces EP, while also exploring contemporary house music and dubstep, collaborating with Praveen Sharma as Sepalcure for a series of records on Hotflush. Before then, the day had begun rather shakily, as the hand-knitted charm typical of a Fence event had threatened to unravel with the aimless electro-sampling of Harry Deerness and crushingly nervous delivery of harpist Serafina Steer.

Friday Having never experienced the sights, sounds and smells of Anstruther, this writer was looking forward to a weekend of music and culture of the absolute highest quality.
Squashed into a tiny Ford Ka with a tonne of bags and four other people was a more intimate than expected way of getting to Anstruther. Eagleowl are old hands at this and their hushed, apocalyptic-sounding folk is an ideal way to get things underway, even if the Anstruther Town Hall is still filling up. It's a short but excellent set, confirming their reputation as Scotland's closest equivalent to Minnesotan slowcore legends Low. Far, far better are Monoganon (right). Now past midnight, we're, uhhhh...

Home Game is the brain child of a very cool and very talented group of musicians called the Fence Collective whose base camp is within Anstruther in the breathtakingly beautiful East Neuk of Fife in Scotland. The festival is possibly the friendliest event you might ever attend and plays host to bands from all over the UK and beyond. This years line-up did not disappoint and included the talents of King Creosote, Pictish Trail, Kid Canaveral, Cate Le Bon, Found and many many more. My personal musical highlight was the amazingly talented and cool Kid Canaveral recently returning from a gruelling stint at SXSW in the US the band gave one of the best performances I have witnessed in long enough.
