Digital-file-formats. Recommended file formats and properties for… The pace at which the language and relevance of digital files evolves can be hard to keep up with.

In an age where new developments also adds to the decline of previous iterations, knowing which file format and encoder are best suited for a project with specific technical, preservation and dissemination objectives can be rather complicated. This infokit aims to present an overview of the current state of play with regards to digital file formats for still images, audio and moving images, with one eye on the future. With such dynamic trends in how digital media is consumed, used and shared where there is currently uncertainty surrounding the take-up of formats in the wider field we have refrained from championing new, but untested formats.

However, where communities are beginning to move away from previously popular formats we hope to reflect these shifts whilst remaining impartial. Lizenzhinweisgenerator. Digital Curation and the Public: Strategies for Education and Advocacy

Memory Lab. Photo by Jaime Mears. On March 4th, 2016, the Washington DC Public Library hosted Digital Curation and the Public: Strategies for Education and Advocacy at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library. It was what the National Digital Stewardship Residents program calls an “enrichment session” and the audience was composed of NDSR colleagues and mentors. Over breakfast I gave informal tours of the Memory Lab, a public-facing digitization lab I created as a part of my residency work.

Yvonne Ng, senior archivist at WITNESS and a member of XFR Collective, led a workshop exploring methods of promoting digital curation to the public. WITNESS reaches their activist audience by creating targeted promotional and educational material about digital preservation. Fabrication Lab. What Is the Future of the Photo Archive?

A conversation with archivists Tracey Schuster and Anne Blecksmith about the changing role of the scholarly photo archive, from neutral guardian of truth to digital ecosystem Photo archives—collections of photographs held by libraries or museums—have long been essential tools for research in the humanities.

What Is the Future of the Photo Archive?

As digital technology evolves, will these archives become obsolete, evolve, or take new forms altogether? The archive’s changing role is among the topics of Photo Archives V: The Paradigm of Objectivity, a two-day symposium taking place at the Getty Center and the Huntington Library on February 25 and 26, 2016. Speakers will explore the relationships among photographic reproduction technologies, archival practices, and the concept of objectivity, with an interdisciplinary outlook and a focus on art history.

Museums: We Have Never Been (Post)digital – The Distant Sound of Trumpets

It’s a nice thought, but as they say, don’t quit your day-job. Museums are starting to move beyond digital as a separate field, or at least should be. This notion (in slightly different forms) is making the rounds and is clearly striking a strong chord. The Met, in their October 2015 blog entry “Next Steps in the Met’s Digital Evolution”, speak of preparing for a postdigital world and the need to take steps “that respond to the inevitable growth of digital-related roles and responsibilities in the organization to the point where digital is no longer something ‘special’ but a mainstream business activity”.

Kajsa Hartig of Stockholm’s Nordiska Museet in her predictions for 2016 speaks of museums moving towards a post-digital condition requiring organizational change and the need for a unified channel strategy beyond a digital/analogue divide.
