In America in the 1950s and 1960s there seemed to be small town versions of such vinyl madness everywhere that, by the 1970s were remaindered and to the majority of people unwanted. To the fledgling Cramps this was nothing short of heaven. This 24-track collection (compiled by Mojo’s Dave Henderson) positively effervesces with eccentricity. Side one offers half a dozen slabs of lip curling rock ‘n’ roll, from the madcap beginnings of ‘Bongo Beatin’ Beatnik’ through to the teenage rampage of Gene Maltais’ unhinged ‘Gang War’. Loin de se vouloir exhaustif ni dépourvu d'éventuelles erreurs, ce petit billet n'a d'autre objectif que de vous donner quelques pistes pour juger si la galette que vous venez d'acheter ou que vous envisager d'acheter est un original, une réédition d'époque ou une réédition récente. Et nous allons voir que ce n'est pas forcément une science exacte ! Nous allons d'abord commencer par éliminer les rééditions évidentes (on ne rigole pas, il y a des évidences pour certains qui ne le sont pas pour d'autres) : S'il est écrit "réédition de 1978", par exemple, sur la pochette ou sur le disque, vous êtes en face d'une réédition et non d'un original (je préfère préciser, on ne sait jamais !). Ceci dit, n'hésitez pas à sortir quand même le vinyle de son étui, vous pourriez tomber sur une version en couleur parfois bien plus difficile à trouver qu'un original du même artiste (les vinyles violets de Deep Purple, les roses de Pink Floyd, le double blanc des Beatles, etc.).
