This is Not a Chinaman Dish. I was watching the movie Crash yesterday. ( Picture source ) I received the DVD via Netflix and it had been sitting on my dresser for two weeks. I somehow forgot that I had actually watched it once before; I rented it because apparently it was a good glimpse into the Los Angeles ethnic scene and I wanted to get ready for my Daily Trojan column this semester (which is going to be on ethnic cross-cultural cuisines in Los Angeles). While I love this spooky holiday as much as the next girl, I'm not really into all of the creepy crawly treats that seem to pop up this time of year. Eyeball cupcakes? Not so much. Blood punch? I don't think so. This year I wanted to make a celebratory snack that was festive but not freaky. My initial idea was to use fresh pumpkin puree and homemade marshmallows, but that would defeat the idea of both quick and easy.

I just don’t think you can beat the gorgeous detailing and smooth finish that royal icing provides. Though I have done my best to share all my tips and tricks in other posts, many readers have requested a “how to” post with step-by-step photos. So for those of you who need the visual guide, let’s decorate with royal icing! Once you have all your supplies together, invert the pastry bags so that they will be ready to be filled with icing. Divide the batch of royal icing between the various airtight containers and color each as desired. Transfer the colored icings to the prepared pastry bags. Pipe outlines around the edges of your cookies. Let the icing outlines set for at least one hour before proceeding. With any of the piping bags that are not in use, store them upright in a drinking glass with a very small amount of water in the bottom.

They are tiny, they are cute, and they taste just like a bite of a nice pie. I love desserts like these. Inspired by a lovely lady called Bakerella, I knew I needed to get these pies into my life as soon as possible. Some things just need to be done immediately. I thought I was being all creative and stuff but it turns out several people have beat me to it. Fortunately that means I don't have to do any guessing. I found this recipe for Chocolate Graham Cracker Cupcakes with Marshmallow Frosting from marthastewart.com but the recipe is actually from Trophy Cupcakes in Seattle. A bunch of my college friends from the University of Washington were getting together for a long weekend of camping, sailing and clamming. One of our friends was also celebrating her birthday so I thought S'more cupcakes would be perfect.

These really are delicious, fun and just about as messy to eat as the original S'more.
