D'Nealian was invented by Scott Foresman, who wanted to have some of the market already held by classic handwriting methods such as Zaner Bloser and Palmer. It was SF who coined the phrase "stick and ball," to make more traditional methods sound less appealing. One of the problems with D'Nealian is that clear directions are not given to the dc; IOW, as long as the resulting letters look "right," then they're "right. " For children who are having trouble with reading and directionality (e.g., knowing that we read from left to right), writing letters any old way really can affect their reading.
