IODINE, AN IMPORTANT NUTRIENT TODAY. By Lawrence Wilson, MD © December 2009, The Center for Development One of the most important and overlooked minerals today is iodine. It is not read on the hair mineral analysis, so we are apt to overlook it. The reason it is not read by most laboratories is that it is hard to read accurately. Therefore, most labs prefer not to read it. However, it is a very important one. Iodine, of course, is needed in the thyroid gland to produce T4 or triiodothyronine. Every cell of the body utilizes iodine in some form. For instance, primarily iodide is needed by the skin and thyroid gland.

Other body tissues, including the kidneys, spleen, liver, blood, salivary glands and intestines, can use either form, apparently. Iodine is regulated in many ways in the thyroid. This requires an enzyme called TPO or thyroperoxidase. The mineral that helps control hydrogen peroxide is selenium. Thus selenium is critical for two phases of thyroid hormone production. Iodine Antagonists. Bromine and bromides. Kelp. Sodium-iodide symporter. The sodium/iodide symporter (NIS), also known as Sodium/iodide cotransporter[1] or solute carrier family 5, member 5 (SLC5A5) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the SLC5A5 gene.[2][3][4] The sodium/iodide symporter is a transmembrane glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 87 kDa and 13 transmembrane domains, which transports two sodium cations (Na+) for each iodide anion (I–) into the cell.[5] NIS mediated uptake of iodide into follicular cells of the thyroid gland is the first step in the synthesis of thyroid hormone.[5] Iodine uptake[edit] Iodine uptake mediated by thyroid follicular cells from the blood plasma is the first step for the synthesis of thyroid hormones.

This ingested iodine is bound to serum proteins, especially to albumins. [citation needed] The rest of the iodine which remains unlinked and free in bloodstream, is removed from the body through urine (the kidney is essential in the removal of iodine from extracellular space). Inhibition[edit] See also[edit] Thyroid Truths. As mentioned in my previous blog post of November 10th, I frequently get emails from doctors all over the world who appreciate the message of patient experience as expressed on Stop the Thyroid Madness, both the revised book and website.

Here is just one more that absolutely blew my mind, as this MD, unlike his ostrich colleagues, keeps his head out of the sand and tells it LIKE IT IS. Again, I will not be mentioning his name. The below is exactly as he wrote it to me. Get ready to be both awed and disgusted! In the year 1847, a young Hungarian physician named Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis had a practice of Obstetrics which began to grow by leaps and bounds. Even the Royalty of Hungary began to go to his practice. Why? When he tried to show his collegues his techniques, they simply made fun of him. His crime? It was not until the 1890′s that his methods were fully recognized, even though Oliver Wendell Holmes of Boston, Mass. TSH levels have been set at 0.3-5.1 as normal. Top 10 Foods Highest in Copper. Oncologists now deliberately depleting women's copper reserves to fight breast cancer, even though trace mineral may help fight tumors.

(NaturalNews) Researchers from Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City have made an interesting discovery they say could hold the key to targeting a rare form of deadly breast cancer. One major problem, however, is that the potential treatment, which involves deliberately depleting women's natural reserves of the mineral copper, contradicts earlier research revealing that copper can actually help fight cancer tumors.

Dr. Linda Vahdat, Director of the Breast Cancer Research Program at Weill Cornell, and her colleagues reportedly tested the effects of the copper-depleting drug tetrathiomolybdate, or TM, on a group of women with high-risk breast cancers. Such cancers include Stage 3 or Stage 4 "no evidence of disease" (NED) breast cancers, as well as metastatic triple-negative breast cancer, an aggressive form of breast cancer that typically kills patients who develop it in less than a year. The Miracle of Magnesium. “Do you know that most of us today are suffering from certain dangerous diet deficiencies which cannot be remedied until depleted soils from which our food comes are brought into proper mineral balance?

The alarming fact is that foods (fruits, vegetables and grains) now being raised on millions of acres of land that no longer contain enough of certain minerals are starving us - no matter how much of them we eat. The truth is that our foods vary enormously in value, and some of them aren't worth eating as food. Our physical well-being is more directly dependent upon the minerals we take into our systems than upon calories or vitamins or upon the precise proportions of starch, protein or carbohydrates we consume. Laboratory tests prove that the fruits, the vegetables, the grains, the eggs, and even the milk and the meats of today are not what they were a few generations ago. Today farmlands are even more mineral-deficient and fertilizers still don't fully replace those minerals. Transdermal Magnesium Therapy. In the caveman period, calcium and magnesium were at a ratio of 1 to 1.

Now, because the soil is no longer magnesium-rich and because the foods that contain magnesium are usually cooked or processed, the mineral is in short supply, and the ratio has become 6 to 1. The disparity has led to many different and varied health issues because magnesium plays a role in most of human processes.Magnesium deficiencies are associated with conditions as varied and as simple as hangovers and wrinkles, and as severe as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Since there is nothing done in the human body that does not use energy, and since that energy cannot be made nor used without magnesium, people become patients suffering from PMS, Chronic Fatigue, low metabolism, painful and enlarged breasts, sinus problems, psoriasis, and heavy metal toxicity.Deficiencies of magnesium are involved with deficiency of Vitamin B6, Vitamin C and E, and with the body's inability to make or use protein. In Journal of the American College of Nutrition, Vol. 13, No. 5, 429-446 (1994) Consequences of Magnesium Deficiency on the Enhancement of Stress Reactions; Preventive and Therapeutic Implications (A Review) Mildred S. Seelig, MD, MPH, Master ACN Department of Nutrition, Schools of Public Health and Medicine, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill The section headers of this paper are as follows: Stress intensifies release of catecholamines and corticosteroids, that increase survival of normal animals when their lives are threatened. Key Teaching Points: Mg deficiency intensifies adverse reactions to stress that can be lifethreatening. Abbreviations Stress, both physical and emotional, evokes release of the stress hormones: catecholamines and corticosteroids, which mediate release and utilization of substrates for energy production and for improved skeletal and cardiac muscle performance.

The End of Antibiotics and the Rise of Iodine as an Effective Alternative. (NaturalNews) Eventually antibiotics are going to be seen as one of the worst things to ever come out of pharmaceutical science because in the end, they have made us only weaker in the face of ever increasingly strong super bugs that are resistant to all the antibiotics doctors have at their disposal. When we look at how deep the rabbit hole goes with antibiotics, we will get sick in our souls. Antibiotics have fulfilled their anti–biotic anti-life role leaving a long trail of death and suffering in the wake of their use. Diseases include measles, scarlet fever, tuberculosis, typhoid fever, pneumonia, influenza, whooping cough, diphtheria and polio. All were in decline for several decades before the introduction of antibiotics or vaccines - Dr.

Lawrence Wilson. Antibiotics do not kill yeast. Many women find after taking antibiotics, they get vaginal yeast infections (because their normal bacterial balance has been lost). A recent risk assessment study commissioned by the U.S. Dr. The Great Iodine Debate. Read this article in: Dutch Iodine is critical to human health. It forms the basis of thyroid hormones and plays many other roles in human biochemistry. While the thyroid gland contains the body’s highest concentration of iodine, the salivary glands, brain, cerebrospinal fluid, gastric mucosea, breasts, ovaries and a part of the eye also concentrate iodine. In the brain, iodine is found in the choroid plexus, the area on the ventricles of the brain where cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is produced, and in the substantia nigra, an area associated with Parkinson’s disease.

Iodine is essential to normal growth and development. Iodine deficiency in utero and during growth can result in cretinism, a condition of severely stunted physical and mental growth due to prolonged nutritional deficiency of iodine or from untreated congenital deficiency of thyroid hormones (hypothyroidism).
