2904.full.pdf. Type 1 Diabetes Among Sardinian Children Is Increasing. The Sardinian diabetes register for children aged 0–14 years (1989–1999) + Author Affiliations Address correspondence and reprint requests to Marco Songini, MD, Diabetes Unit, Azienda Ospedaliera Brotzu, Via Peretti, 09134 Cagliari, Italy. E-mail: Abstract OBJECTIVE—The Sardinian type 1 diabetes register represented the basis to determine the most recent trends and the age distribution of type 1 diabetes incidence among Sardinians <15 years of age during 1989–1999. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS—The new cases of type 1 diabetes in children aged 0–14 years in Sardinia were prospectively registered from 1989 to 1999 according to the EURODIAB ACE criteria. RESULTS—A total of 1,214 type 1 diabetic patients were registered yielding to an overall age- and sex-standardized incidence rate of 38.8/100,000 (95% CI 36.7–41.1).

It has been claimed that the incidence of type 1 diabetes has increased in many countries over the past 20–30 years (1). Data collection Population data Table 1— Download Limit Exceeded. A Game Theoretic Framework for Analyzing Re-Identification Risk. Introduction Our ability to collect and analyze personal data has grown dramatically over the past decade, a trend that shows no sign of slowing.

While this information enables a wide range of institutions to perform novel research in biomedicine and the social sciences, big data has become big business. There is a rapidly expanding market for sharing and selling data for secondary analysis, driven by profits as well as grant funding agencies aiming to support transparency and research productivity [1, 2]. This movement towards data sharing en masse must be accomplished by provisions that appropriately protect the privacy expectations of the individuals to whom the data corresponds [3, 4].

The HIPAA Privacy Rule [5] states that only “individually identifiable” information is covered by the regulation. Table 1. We were also asked not to take photographs of slides. Those who worked for government agencies pleaded that their comments especially remain unquoted, since the forthcoming UK election meant they were living in “purdah”—a chilling state where severe restrictions on freedom of speech are placed on anyone on the government's payroll.

Why the paranoid concern for secrecy and non-attribution? Because this symposium—on the reproducibility and reliability of biomedical research, held at the Wellcome Trust in London last week—touched on one of the most sensitive issues in science today: the idea that something has gone fundamentally wrong with one of our greatest human creations. An Artist with Amnesia - The New Yorker. Using a pencil and a ruler, Lonni Sue Johnson lovingly traced a blue line across a sheet of graph paper. Skipping down four rows, she drew another line; she repeated this process until she got to the bottom. Then she flipped the page on its side and began making a grid. On a nearby chair, a black tote bag, stuffed to the point that it resembled an anvil, held folders filled with hundreds of nearly identical designs. She didn’t look up when her sister, Aline, and her mother, Maggi, reminded her that it was time to stop. For Johnson, who is sixty-four, it never feels like time to stop. Many days, she draws so much—from rigid geometric compositions to winsome cartoon animals—that pencil shavings pile up on the floor like autumn leaves.

Lately, Johnson draws for pleasure, but for three decades she had a happily hectic career as an illustrator, sometimes presenting clients with dozens of sketches a day. “It’s experiment time,” Aline said. She leaped up and said, “Thank you!” Silence. “Oh!” AcademyHealth Blog — Advancing Research, Policy and Practice. The Maker Movement Is About the Economy, Stupid. A movement made up of hobbyists, tinkerers, crafters and innovators is getting ready to change what you thought you knew about the American economy. They’re teaching a new generation how to repair rather than replace, and if what they’re looking for is not available, to invent it. They call themselves “makers,” and they will figure out how to build whatever you can imagine.

If policy makers can come together and be supportive, this movement may be the catalyst that brings manufacturing back to America. The last few decades have seen a steep decrease in domestic manufacturing, and many people seemed to buy in to the proposition that our manufacturing sector had forever fallen behind. Analysts became resigned to the idea that labor costs in Asia and Mexico would never allow us to be competitive, and that we needed to shift the fundamentals of our economy to reflect this.

As consumers, many Americans initially seemed complacent with the situation. Found this interesting? Livrefr-fondation-charcot.pdf. 7676.pdf. Sexuality-and-ms.pdf. Znl1315.pdf. The 18-year-old runner sets records, wins state titles, and next week, she's headed to nationals in New York.

But when Montgomery runs, her legs go totally numb. When she was 14, she fell during a soccer game. She told her coach, Patrick Cromwell, about the strange sensations in her legs. Then, the doctor visits began. "She was so calm about it," Cromwell says. At the end of each race, Kayla Montgomery collapses into the arms of her coach, Patrick Cromwell. Montgomery was determined to keep running.

? Ce blog parle un peu de neurologie. Please take the time to read Christine Miserandino’s personal story and analogy of what it is like to live with sickness or disability. by Christine Miserandino My best friend and I were in the diner, talking. As usual, it was very late and we were eating French fries with gravy. Like normal girls our age, we spent a lot of time in the diner while in college, and most of the time we spent talking about boys, music or trivial things, that seemed very important at the time. We never got serious about anything in particular and spent most of our time laughing. As I went to take some of my medicine with a snack as I usually did, she watched me with an awkward kind of stare, instead of continuing the conversation.

I started to ramble on about pills, and aches and pains, but she kept pursuing, and didn’t seem satisfied with my answers. As I tried to gain my composure, I glanced around the table for help or guidance, or at least stall for time to think. 70 useful sentences for academic writing. Back in the late 90s, in the process of reading for my MA dissertation, I put together a collection of hundreds of sentence frames that I felt could help me with my academic writing later on. And they did. Immensely. After the course was over, I stacked my sentences away, but kept wondering if I could ever put them to good use and perhaps help other MA / PhD students. So here are 70 sentences extracted and adapted for from the original compilation, which ran for almost 10 pages.

Data carpentry is a skilled, hands-on craft and will form a major part of data science in the future. As data science becomes all the more relevant and indeed, profitable, attention has been placed on the value of cleaning a data set.

David Mimno unpicks the term and the process and suggests that data carpentry may be a more suitable description. There is no such thing as pure or clean data buried in a thin layer of non-clean data. In reality, the process is more like deciding how to cut and join a piece of material. Data carpentry is not a single process but a thousand little skills and techniques.

The New York Times has an article titled For Big-Data Scientists, ‘Janitor Work’ Is Key Hurdle to Insights. Mostly I really like it.
