The humid air and persistent drizzle last Saturday (actually the Saturday before last… it’s taken me quite some time to compose this post) did not deter us from having an intimate garden party to celebrate Laly’s second birthday.

I have not hosted a party since we lived on the houseboat in Amsterdam, so I was feeling a bit daunted about the idea and wondered if I could do it without getting completely overwhelmed and stressed (the main reason why I don’t host parties – dinner ones or otherwise). I worked hard for the two weeks leading up to the event to be really present with my time and to let things go if they weren’t working out the way I intended, or if things happened that stopped me from being able to create exactly what I had envisioned.

My intention was to try my best to have fun with each part of the process – painting the bunting, gathering the flora, cooking, setting up… I still got stressed, and we still had a family meltdown the day of the party. Pecannoot. Concrete and honey. Swallowfield. My Pocket. Music is love in search of a word. Sidney Lanier Music and fire is all I wanted to write about today, or well, it wasn't so much a choice. These photos wanted to come out and they are not my usual motif. I do love music and it follows me through my day, whether I sing to myself or listen ~ Edith Piaf sang La Vie en Rose to me this afternoon in the bookshop, I sang along to Bruce Springsteen's I'm on Fire (it always gets me, so much longing) and I hummed 'I don't give a damn ~ I'm happy as a clam' all morning shuffling books in the library (Nobody Knows Me at All, The Weepies).

The photo above came out that way and I love it, it's like the jazz is still there in the colours, reverberating in the air. Don't worry about saving these songs! And if one of our instruments breaks, it doesn't matter. We have fallen into the place where everything is music. The strumming and the flute notes rise into the atmosphere, and even if the whole world's harp should burn up, there will still be Stop the words now.

The Middle East, that is. 3 weeks ago, this past Sunday, my husband Giuseppe and I moved to Dubai, UAE. This amazing opportunity errupted and we jumped in...both feet, no looking back...and here we sit, in the Middle East! Who would've thought that 3 months ago, at our wedding, on 7/7/07, that this was in the stars for us! It is amazing, surreal and extravagant in all aspects of the word. Let me brief you a bit on my initial reaction to moving here...HUH? However, that was not my first reaction to arriving here...it was more like WOW! That is where the 'extravagant' part comes in...the lifestyle, the people, the spaces, the architecture (that is why WE are here), the beauty, it is all extravagant.

No kidding, 1/4 of the world's cranes are here in Dubai. Overall, we absolutely have embraced our move to Dubai, and are thoroughly enjoying where we live...the area is called Old Town, Burj Dubai, and it is centrally located to everything! Urban Prairie Refueled. Discourse & Design. Athena Dreams Design. I've been thinking a lot these past months about success. I've spent time with friends in conversation about success and what it means to us. How we define it as a culture. How I define it for myself. How the idea of success can creep in and change a moment, and how we all have our own measuring stick for what success is for us.

This past weekend I went to a Battle of the Bands at a local high school with my husband. One of his private music students was in one of the bands playing. I felt gratitude to each and every one of the kids that got up there to share their gifts, their passion, their excitement and their hopes of winning because it reminded me that I am on this path to do the same; to share with others what drives me to create, and keep creating.

And I might be the loser. Watching those kids jump around on stage, playing music together, having fun and sharing their hearts, I thought: wow, this is success. They didn't win. Every morning I see her. She is as consistent as Al Roker’s silly jokes and my son’s breakfast choice (always oatmeal).

When I moved into my neighborhood in Orange two and a half years ago she was the first person I met. Her name is Gertrude* and she is in her nineties. Her constant partner is named Tulia Pie, a white and brown Shih Tzu dog. Gertrude introduced herself one afternoon as I swept out my garage. At a rapid pace – impressive for a woman of her age – she told me her life story. Her son-in-law, who has cancer and was in hospice, he too is wonderful, and the nurses and staff where he is are just wonderful and take good care of him. As she spoke to me that morning one prevailing sentiment was repeated over and over – wonderful. Life is wonderful according to Gertrude. It’s obviously not perfect. Every story she told, no matter the outcome, she always ended on a positive note. “I just moved here with my two kids,” I told her. I’ve seen her most mornings since then. Robie House. 10 tips for beating blogger’s block. You’ve been there.

You sit down, ready to write the next killer blog post, only to have your mind go totally blank. Then, your brain clutters up with fluffy thoughts of melted chocolate, lust-inducing iPhones, and unicorns. (Or is that just me?) Even if you don’t blog, you know the agony and frustration of losing the words you want to write. Here are my favorite tips for eliminating writer’s block: 1. Blogs aren’t novels, so don’t start a post by worrying about being perfect, insightful, original, or even grammatically correct. 2. Do you feel pressure to write a full-length piece? 3.

Never start a post without a deadline. 4. Use clever writing tools such as Writeroom (Mac) and Dark Room (Windows) to eliminate all distractions on your computer. 5. Even if it’s just a hobby, don’t blog before bed and after a long day’s work. 6. Who says you have to blog non-stop or even every day? 7. HitTail analyzes the words on your blog and makes suggestions for related topics you can write about. 8. 9. House of Pictures. The Hip Homemaker. The Bright Side Project - Sunshine Delivered Daily.
