How to Talk in Meetings When You Hate Talking in Meetings. Nobody loves meetings. But they can be especially taxing for people who crave a quieter setting for brainstorming or thinking through issues, or who struggle to have their voices heard in a room full of loud-talkers. How can these folks make sure their ideas are well-represented in team meetings? For some practical advice, we turned to Susan Cain, author of Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking and co-founder of The Quiet Leadership Institute, which helps companies unlock the power of the introverted half of the workforce.

An edited version of our conversation follows: HBR: Introverts tend to listen — and think — more than they speak. How can they avoid coming across as disengaged or even apathetic during a meeting, when they’re actually very deeply in thought? Cain: One thing I often tell introverts is to do a lot of prep work before a meeting begins, whether or not you’ve been formally asked to do so, because it’s probably what you need to personally do. Best bookshops in London: The most Instagrammable spots to find your next read. There's nothing better than spending an entire afternoon browsing one of London's bookshops. The smells, the crisp snap of the pages and the countless great minds that stalk the shelves are as alluring as a bookstores architectural chic.

Luckily, our city is home to an impressive selection of shops that celebrate the capital's extraordinary literary history. You'd think the digital age would have seen them close by now, but in fact, gadgets like the Kindle have only made their appeal even stronger. Now, you'll find bookstores donning rare collectibles alongside coffee shops and bespoke shopping experiences – things you simply can't appreciate online. Some also have great niches (early shout out to Word on the Water), too.

In short, there's more charm in the pages of a novel than there is on your average iPad. So that you can appreciate just how darling our bookhavens are, we've rounded up some of the capital's finest. Introduction – Foundations of Learning and Instructional Design Technology. The Past, Present, and Future of Learning and Instructional Design Technology Richard E. West Like most, I had a serendipitous beginning to my career in this field. I knew I loved to teach but did not know what subject. I’ve learned over the years that my experience is more common than not, as there is not “a proper way” (see Lloyd Rieber’s Peter Dean lecture, republished in this book) to come into this field. Because we work in a meta-discipline, editing a book on the “foundations” of the field is very difficult. I repeat, this book will not cover everything a student in the field should know. Scholars disagree on what we should even call our field. This book reflects a suggested strategy for teaching new graduate students in the LIDT field. The third section of the book focuses on current trends and issues, using the concept of “current” fairly liberally.

Because this is an openly licensed book, it is meant to be shared. Reflection What do you hope to learn from this textbook? 6 steps for designing impactful solutions. As the social problems we face in the world are more complex and systemic than ever before, we need to come up with new creative ways of solving them. How can we design ways to address the loneliness crisis, accelerate the transition to a circular economy, or remove barriers faced by people with hidden disabilities? These are some of the challenges posed by the 10 design briefs in this year’s RSA Student Design Awards (SDA), a global competition that challenges participants to tackle the big issues of our time through design thinking.

Kinneir Dufort’s Head of Design & Innovation (and SDA judge) Russell Beard offers his advice on how to approach designing solutions, whether you’re entering the RSA Student Design Awards or wrestling with a different challenge. 1 Empathy The most important thing is the ability to understand the people that are affected by the problem, and your eventual solution. The best word I have heard to describe this is empathy. Empathy can take many forms. 2 Discovery 6. Digital classrooms - making the most of inclusion - Accessible Organisations. Episode 103: Innovation != progress by TIDE Podcast. Designing Learning Experiences in an Evidence-Informed Way. Mirjam Neelen & Paul A. Kirschner As you might know, we’ve been writing this research-based, evidence-informed blog for slightly over three years and we both still very much enjoy it.

Our goal is to present learning professionals (teachers, learning designers, trainers, etc.) with evidence-informed ideas on how to make both the instructional and the learning experience more effective, efficient, and enjoyable (hence ‘3-star learning experiences’). We’re both passionate about this topic and we try to ‘spread the word’ as much as we can. Although for us it’s clear what it means to work as Learning Designers in an evidence-informed manner, Mirjam noticed during her talk that it wasn’t necessarily clear to everyone in the audience what this meant.

The image below shows how evidence-based practice approaches clinical practice these different types. What Is Evidence-Informed Learning Design? ). Last week I stumbled upon an interesting article, on Contact North’s website, titled How to Design an Innovative Course. I have to admit that initially my interest was piqued because the term “innovative” has been a buzz word in the e-learning industry for many moons, so I wasn’t sure if I would buy into the “innovation” the article was proposing or whether it would be just another article peddling non-innovative innovation.

However, the article was posted by Contact North, and I respect Contact North, so I gave it a read, applying it to online courses in particular. I quickly found myself nodding at my computer monitor – doing something differently ISN’T innovative (most times). Reading further, I continued nodding. “In particular innovative teaching should result in solving some challenge or problem you are facing.” (2014) – YES! It’s not particularly innovative to just throw a course on the internet and call it done!
