Walking in Mathland

The answer is yes you can study mathematics. There is apparently a rumor going around telling students that math cannot be studied. This is a lie. Run from the darkness. The issue is students need to learn how to study math. Cheat Sheet (See photo to the left)Start reviewing notes, power-points, textbook, or whatever form the material being tested was presented on and on a blank sheet of paper write out problems, equations, formulas, and helpful hints on the material you do not 100% understand. Flashcards This is a fabulous tool to use with units where there is vocabulary, properties, and formulas that will tested. YouTube VideosI have written of my love for YouTube as a teaching method I use in class so it should be not surprise that I am using it again.

Bottom line...to study math you have to take time to study the math. Work with different strategies to see what works. How do you study mathematics? Quality Math Tasks. Inside Mathematics

A problem that you can’t solve in less than a day is usually a problem that is similar to one that you have solved before. But in real life, a problem is a situation that confronts you and you don’t have an idea of where to even start. If we want our students to be problem solvers and mathematically powerful, we must model perseverance and challenge students with non-routine problems. Administrators, teachers and parents should facilitate and support students in the process of attacking and reasoning about the problems. The solution is not as important as the process of problem solving. The educator or parent should not be impatient with the student’s struggle. The principal should embrace the concept of problem solving and model problem-solving leadership, being a facilitator of non-routine problems. Once the problem is presented to the students, the principal should be visible in facilitating the tasks alongside the teachers.

Students model with buttons and record addition and subtraction. Birthday Paradox. Background Information A graphing-calculator feature that can be used in conjunction with the classic birthday paradox is a random-integer generator.

Birthday Paradox

With the proper commands, this feature allows the calculator to create lists of random birthdays that can serve as data for students to explore. Students can then run calculator-based simulations of the birthday paradox and can explore the fact that more than 50 percent of the time, when groups of "random" strangers are assembled, only twenty-three persons are needed to find a matching pair of birthdays. Rates and Taxes. Benjamin Franklin said, "Nothing is certain but death and taxes.

Rates and Taxes

" A mathematics class may not be the right place to discuss death, but it is a good place to discuss taxes. In the process, students can learn some important lessons about slopes, split functions, averages, rates, marginal rates, and percents (and taxes). Taxes are an important political issue. Just prior to the 1990 elections, the federal deficit was very high, and taxes needed to be raised in spite of George Bush's 1988 campaign pledge "Read my lips-no new taxes. " Communicating to the people that any changes would be fair was very important in an election year.
