Twelve people died in the attack, and 58 were injured. After the 2007 mass shooting that left 33 dead at Virginia Tech, the University of Colorado set up a special team to spot students who were suicidal or might pose a threat to others. There is no indication that the team — made up of mental-health professionals, campus police and others — had identified Holmes as a student in need of monitoring. Campus police, whose officers participate in the Behavioral Evaluation and Threat Assessment team, have said they had no contact with Holmes. Other team members reached in recent days declined to discuss Holmes.

University Chancellor Don Elliman told reporters this week that to his knowledge, “We did everything we should have done in this case.” But Carrigan said the team has improved campus life. And he certainly wasn’t lucky in love. John Jacobson helped guide Holmes during a 2006 summer internship at the University of California’s prestigious Salk Institute in San Diego and said the suspected gunman in the Colorado movie theater massacre was thickheaded, uncommunicative and irresponsible. “He should not have gotten into the summer program,” Jacobson, 37, told the Los Angeles Times. “His grades were mediocre. Aurora massacre suspect James Holmes: Understanding the mind of the alleged mass killer

In some respects, the alleged mass murderer in Aurora, Colo. fits a profile of the typical mass killer that my colleague James Alan Fox and I developed some 30 years ago. In all likelihood, the Colorado killer was depressed and socially isolated, having no place to turn when he got into trouble. In addition, he likely blamed everybody but himself for his personal problems and had access to and training in the use of semi-automatic firearms. The Joker is playing the amnesia card. Accused mass murderer James Holmes told jailhouse workers that he remains stumped about what landed him in a Colorado lockup, a jail staffer told the Daily News. “He claims he doesn’t know why he’s in jail,” the worker said Thursday. “He asked, ‘Why am I here?’” Holmes, 24, who is charged with shooting a dozen people to death and wounding 58 more at a screening of the new Batman movie, was also complaining of a stomach ache caused by lousy jail food after his sixth day at the Arapahoe County Detention Center, the worker said.

“He’s claiming his belly hurts him,” the worker said. The former California honor student picks at his meals on some days, and doesn’t eat at all on others. Holmes surrendered without incident to police. The suspect remains under 23-hour lockdown, leaving his cell just once a day. James Holmes: “Joker” Will Undergo Psychiatric Evaluation. James Holmes, the 24-year old man who entered a Colorado theater early Friday morning and opened fire–killing 12 and wounding 60–will undergo extensive psychiatric testing over the next several months to determine whether or not he’s competent to stand trial. If doctors find that he was under extreme mental duress during the shootings, he may be able to enter a “not guilty by reason of insanity” plea to the first-degree murder charge currently held against him. The news comes just one day after Holmes first appeared in court, during an eleven-minute proceeding in which Holmes appeared dazed, unconcerned, and even drugged. But it’s extremely unlikely that the jury will accept such a plea no matter what the doctors find, according to Dr.

Keith Ablow. Contrary to popular belief, defendants who are found not criminally responsible by virtue of a mental illness generally remain on locked psychiatry units for several decades–or for life.
