How to use Tasker on Android. I don't know about you, but one of the main issues I have with fancy-pants smart phones is the multitude of options and settings I'm forced to wade through to get my handset to behave exactly how I want it to.

How to use Tasker on Android

It seems that every activity I indulge in requires additional steps. Watching YouTube videos or streaming music demands that I switch on my Wi-Fi. Preventing my phone from ringing during tense meetings means manually turning off the ringer. Getting an undisturbed night's sleep is impossible unless I remember to disable email notifications before climbing the wooden hill to Bedfordshire. Smart phones are meant to be smart, aren't they? To prove its prowess, I've compiled this handy guide, which outlines a few of Tasker's possible uses. As usual, I've used the CNET UK Phone of the Year 2011 -- the peerless Samsung Galaxy S2 -- as my test subject for this guide. 1.

With Tasker, any Android device can have this function. Next, you'll have to select the context for the profile. 2. Train your Android phone to act automatically with Tasker. Every day, we repeat the same routine tasks: turning on Wi-Fi at work, decreasing the brightness in the evening, enabling silent mode at night, and so on.

Train your Android phone to act automatically with Tasker

By now, you probably perform these actions subconsciously, but what if you could "train" your phone to automatically complete these tasks, so you don't have to? Tasker, a $6.49 app for Android, lets you do just that. It works like this: If the phone is in X situation, then Y happens. Within the app, this formula is defined by using "contexts" and "tasks. " The context defines the situation in which the task is triggered. For example, when my phone is at 20 percent battery life (context) disable Wi-Fi (task). There are endless combinations of contexts and tasks that can be as simple or as complicated as you want.

When you launch Tasker, you'll arrive at the Profiles tab. The best way to master Tasker is to get your hands dirty. 1. Tap the plus sign to create a new profile. With the iPad Camera Connection Kit allowing users to connect a variety of unexpected USB devices (like a MIDI keyboard) to their iPads, the next logical question was, "Is there something similar for Android?

Clever adapter connects USB accessories to your Android device

" Although it's not advertised or sold by any of the big Android phone manufacturers, the solution is a cheap cable called a USB On-The-Go adapter. USB On-The-Go (Amazon link), or USB OTG, is essentially a female USB port that plugs into the Micro-USB port of a phone or tablet, allowing you to connect devices that use a standard USB 2.0 or 3.0 connection. In a nutshell, the adapter allows the Android device to be a "USB host," powering and communicating with the connected device.

Compatibility So far, it's been difficult to figure out which Android devices are compatible with the USB OTG cable. It's clear, however, that the Samsung family of Android phones and tablets are the most USB-friendly of them all, allowing users to connect the greatest variety of USB devices.
