Sew ritzy~titzy. If I had to pick a favorite bug -- it would be the dragonfly.. Every time I behold the sheer, translucent, shimmering beauty of the dragonfly's wing -- I am stunned into silence. And guess what? There is a crochet pattern that involves a dragonfly. So to speak. It is Dragonfly Shawl, designed by Lisa Naskrent and is described as being a 'symphony of elegance with a dance in flight.' Everything about this pattern is a 'symphony of elegance'! Interweave CROCHET winter 2008 Now, given the alternative of written directions vs. a diagram -- hands down, I will always pick the diagram. I mean -- honestly!

... s-ch 5 in each ch-5 sp to first SMK, [BP-sh-seq, s-ch-5 in next ch-5 sp] through first ch-5 sp after last SMK on this side... What does that mean?!!?. Crocodile Stitch. ...so I came across a lovely pattern on www.ravelry.com that included using, what they called, the Crocodile Stitch. Firstly, I have no problem paying for a pattern that someone has created and posted on the internet.

I have no problem paying for an item that I don't want to make myself, from the internet. BUT, I don't think there is any reason to have to pay to learn a stitch. ONE STINKING STITCH! Then I can make anything I want! Would you expect to charge someone to learn how to make a double crochet? So I really loved this "Crocodile Stitch", but couldn't find it anywhere in an This video, however, only shows how to create the first row, and not the second row and so forth.

So to be a good citizen, I will share my method with you, so that you can have a lovely scarf for yourself and your loved ones. I made one purchase during a girls weekend trip to the beach a few weeks ago. It was this book. And, a new little obsession began. Did you know the popularity of caravaning began in England when the Brits decided to start going on holiday in these little beauties. Can't you just picture me waking up in a sweet little caravan (such a better word than trailer), opening the two tiny roller shades that are within an arms reach to let the sunshine stream in as I enjoy a wonderous weekend in the great outdoors with my sweetheart?

On the beach? I just love this mini green one. This one reminds me of Uncle Rico. Oh, and the interiors. We had a VW Westfalia when I was a youngster. This one is by far my favorite. How about a caravan for the backdrop of an outdoor soriee? So fun. I could spend a week in this on the islands of Hawaii. This is small, I admit, but look how thoughtfully the space is used.

Pet rocks and Chia pets, move over – or just sit there, as the case may be- here is a home hobby that goes beyond kitsch aesthetics to add functionality to your daily life. Yes, now you can grow your own living, breathing, all-organic lamp with just a little love, care and the occasional fill-up with an outdoor hose or indoor kitchen faucet.

Long considered for potential bio-fuel properties, algae can be tapped for low levels of continuous electricity – perfect for the minimal power requirements of an elementary lighting fixture. All it requires is a bit of carbon dioxide, some natural light and water in which to grow – you can even set it outside in the sun then breath into it to give it an extra boost. Cool Summer DIY: 2 Project Ideas for a Hot & Humid Home. Mosquitoes and humidity may be regional but heat impacts most places during the summer season to one degree (no pun intended) or another. For those folks in states like Minnesota where the weather is worst in the upcoming months, here are two do-it-yourself projects that might be a perfect way to take the edge off. First comes the Sketterbag – a natural, easy, cheap and chemical-free ‘green’ alternative trap to standard (often toxic) mosquito-control designs.

It basically consists of bug netting custom cut to fit on the end of a box fan – you can buy one or simply create your own variant with minimal work and tools. As for the bait: that is where you (and/or your pets) come in – the bugs will naturally swarm around blood sources, so putting one around you (and/or your animals) offers maximum protection but also the most tempting target. Placing it near lights and openings between indoor and/or outdoor spaces can help as well. Moving Boxes: DIY Modular Cardboard-Recycling Bookcases. Why pay more for modularity when light, cheap and portable will do? That is the question this creative shelving system seeks to answer, using a series of simple cardboard sheets cut into sturdy square-box storage shelves. Minimalist designer Dany Gilles used a kit-of-parts approach, raiding recycling bins for usable scrap (as can be seen via the labels on the sides of the boxes).

The interlocking parts create a system of stable stand-alone book or display shelves that are each structurally independent from the next. A set of top-and-bottom, tongue-and-groove ‘lips’ and ‘slots’ makes it easy to stack one unit on top of the next. Other projects by Gilles explore innovative and material-efficient ways to recycle ordinary scrap paper and use standard-dimension building elements (like dimensional lumber) to create simple, unique and functional everyday objects including coat racks, lamps and more. Trash to Treasure: Re-Imagining Your Waste {Pallets} Ages ago I worked at an international freight forwarding company who primarily shipped oil and gas related goods to the Russian Far East. Maker of things: {DIY} Toddler Pallet Bed. This blog is no longer active. All content from this blog has been moved to my new website: LoriDanelle.com. To view this post on the new site, click here. ********************************************************************************************* So I thought I'd share with you how I made Little Sister's toddler pallet bed, because I know you're staking out dumpsters at warehouses and such, trying to get your hands on a couple of pallets so you can make a bed of your own.

Right? Plus, this will save you from half a dozen trips to Home Depot throughout the duration of the project for supplies you had no idea you needed. ( no, I'm not speaking from experience. . .OK, OK, maybe I did take 5 trips. ) To start you'll need at least 2 pallets, 3 if you're going to need to do any repairs to your pallet — and spare parts are never a bad thing. ****the following could come in handy, but may not be necessary, depending on placement of slats & nails**** • hand saw • sawsall with blade for metal. Floating shelf w/ secret compartment (I made it at TechShop!) This shelf was inspired by the "lack" shelf you can buy at Ikea.

I have many of them and really like how minimal they are, but since they are basically a box hanging on the wall i didn't like the waste of "inner space". So to solve that problem i incorporated a bottom that opens to reveal a small storage compartment. this entire project was made at the TechShop Detroit, check it out here to make this shelf you will need the following: tools: -chop saw -drill -screwdriver -hammer -chisel -pliers -sander materials: -wood (i used a 6'x12" pine board) -2 cabinet hinges -wood glue -small finishing nails -1' length small chain -4 screw in eyelets -magnetic cabinet latch -2 heavy duty keyhole picture hangers -paint of your choice(or leave wood finish)

DIY: Wire Waste Basket Turned Pendant Light. Contributor post by Janis Nicolay of Pinecone Camp Hi Everyone! Janis here, from Pinecone Camp. I mentioned on my blog, a couple of weeks ago, that I had found a $2 wire waste basket, and I was going to turn it into a pendant light. Well here it is. I used scrapes of fabric to create a light for my niece. Simple and really inexpensive! I picked up a "hemma" cord set from Ikea to attach to my $2 basket. Next step was to snip out a space to feed the cord through. Cut strips of fabric to weave and wrap around basket. Weave fabric strip through basket about every 6 inches. A happy light for a niece that doesn't like really dark rooms. ;) Gives of a pinky glow and some pretty shadows.

So great to contribute to one of my favourite blogs! Not everyone can attest to having enormous pallets at their access–mine happened to be leftover from our recent flagstone patio project (you can read about that here, here, here, and here).

I wasn’t about to let them go to waste. See, they’re a lot bigger than the common pallet you often come across, they’re mammoth and strong enough to support thousands of pounds of flagstone, each weighing approximately 60 pounds. Side note: I can’t take a picture with my dog, Cody, without him howling. Due to their weight, these pallets weren’t going to be ideal for a wall-hanging piece like you often see, but I did have a project in mind that would make great use of the strong, free materials. Keep on reading to see how I designed and built my own DIY outdoor pallet table! A pallet table seemed like the perfect fit, so just this week, I got to work creating a new piece of furniture from the pallet that had been sitting in the driveway. Insta-tabletop!
